The 83rd annual Academy Awards, hosted by James Franco and Anne Hathaway, didn’t offer up many surprises, aside from Melissa Leo’s dropping the f-bomb in her Best Supporting Actress acceptance speech. Everything else went pretty much according to plan, with The King’s Speech ruling the night, taking away Best Actor, Best Director, and the coveted Best Picture.

Things definitely ended on a high-note with the PS22 Chorus taking to the stage for "Somewhere Over The Rainbow."

If rumors are to be believed, the newest "Batman" movie, entitled "The Dark Knight Rises," is set to film in Pittsburgh, as well as London, Los Angeles, and New York.

Christopher Nolan will be returning to direct Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, and Gary Oldman in their reprising roles. New stars that have signed on include Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hardy, and Anne Hathaway, who will be playing Catwoman. French actress and Oscar winner, Marion Cotillard, is said to have signed on just last week. The film’s release is set for July 2012, and filming is expected to wrap in New York in November.

President of the Pittsburgh Film Office, Dawn Keezer, declined to comment on the “Batman” rumors, but did say that five feature films are scouting the area for projects this spring and summer. And just last week, 20th Century Fox Television began filming a pilot for a comic and graphic novel series being adapted for television entitled "Locke & Key" right here in Pittsburgh. Sounds promising.

Grammys 2011 | Arcade Fire, Lady Antebellum Rule The Night.

Some surprises occurred at last night’s Grammy Awards, particularly with Esperanza Spalding taking home Best New Artist, instead of shoo-in Justin Bieber. Lady Gaga, though winning two awards, didn’t walk away with as many as predicted, what with the huge year she just experienced. And Eminem, with ten nominations to his name, left with just two Grammys in hand. Instead, Lady Antebellum and Arcade Fire ruled the night.

Lady Antebellum went home with Record of the Year and Song of the Year for "Need You Now,” as well as Country Album of the Year, Best Country Song of the Year, and Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. And Arcade Fire took the top honor of the night with Album of the Year.

Derrick and Eric met on the 1st ever Fresh Meat Challenge. Fresh Meat was the 1st Challenge to bring on competitors that were never on The Real World or Road Rules. Derrick already had 3 shows under his belt and Eric was merely Fresh Meat ready to make his mark in The Challenge World. Eric was chosen by Kate "The Great" aka Katie Doyle. She has continued to be a close friend to both over the years. Eric surprised us all on The Duel when he dominated the 1st Challenge winning immunity. He continued to show his athleticism through the competition finishing in 5th place. This high school kicker, believe it or not, is one of the best in the mini challenges. Unfortunately, the finale of The Gauntlet 3 had continued to haunt him during the most current season of CutThroat where he was cornered, held captive, and forced into The Gulag by his teammates. Despite a valiant effort knocking off Vinny from Fresh Meat 2,he allowed his emotions to get the best of him by deciding to slap the smack out of Luke's face with a fly swatter instead of keeping an eye the prize. Derrick and Eric meet again for a very friendly conversation discussing everything Eric has endured over his years in the Challenge circle.

This is Part 1 of 2.

The Laugh Factory - Adding Therapy to the Bill

---
A seemingly common trait among some of the funniest, most talented comedians (Richard Pryor, John Belushi, Chris Farley, Dave Chapelle, Rodney Dangerfield, etc.): demons, self-destruction, the need to retreat into depression and insecurity. These demons are what The Laugh Factory’s owner of 32 years, Jamie Masada, wants to fight. Instead of stepping off-stage and taking part in the parties and endless debauchery, Masada is choosing Psychotherapy. An in-house therapy program will be available four nights a week for Laugh Factory comedians, with treatment from one of two clinical psychologists accessible for free, no-appointment-necessary sessions that will take place on a couch that used to belong to legendary comedian Groucho Marx.

Godfathers of Comedy begins around a table: wine, food, conversation. We then see a bit of the backstage action (as we will throughout the special), before the camera hones in on the stage and the comedy.

First up is Willie Fratto.

Source: DesMoinesRegister.com
Willie’s Highlights:
- Talk of the nuns at his Catholic school (“nunchucks” come from nuns, Willie says).
- Willie wants a new job. His requirements: “I can only work about a half hour a day…I gotta be able to drink on the job.”
- “All I can think of is how you get down to one tooth.”

Next up is my personal favorite, Rocky LaPorte, who has a hilarious and unique delivery and never fails to make me laugh.

Rocky’s Highlights:
- “I remember one time I brought my report card home. I go, “Hey Pop, I got a B in Reading!” He goes, “That’s a D, you idiot.”
- “I go, ‘make love?’ We’ll burst into flames, what the hell are you talking about?...‘Make love.’ We’ll start a grease fire, you idiot.”
- “It looks like Hitler sticking his head out the window.”
- “Sometimes they don’t even have the right sex. I go, ‘Do you know a Mike Smith?’ He goes, ‘I know a Denise Smith.’ I go, ‘Oh yeah – that’s the guy.’

Tres Lads

This powerful acoustic trio from Pittsburgh, PA is not the type of acoustic band you’d listen to while sipping a latte. People always ask, “How do you three guys with acoustic guitars make such a huge sound?” With all three Lads singing lead and playing guitar, you hear soaring vocals and three part harmonies on covers of crowd favorites such as Journey, Queen, The Beatles, Jan’s Addiction, Oasis, Bon Jovi, and many more. Logging in 180+ shows last year, Jean-Marc, Freddie and Kevin have never left an audience unsatisfied. Whether it’s sharing the stage with Bad Company and The Clarks, headlining festivals and colleges, or playing regular Friday nights at The Hard Rock Café and many other clubs across the tri-state area, every performance is a “show” and will make a fan out of you for sure.

He discusses his love of the city (he hails from Swissvale), and credits his hometown for shaping him into a successful and hardworking comedian/actor, now starring in the hit CBS show Mike and Molly. Billy says, “The support that I’ve gotten from Pittsburgh is overwhelming. I mean it literally fills my heart...It also reminds me of who I am, and I take great pride in not embarrassing this city. I always want to be able to come home.”

Gardell expresses his gratitude for being a part of WHIRL magazine and details his trips back to his hometown: a trip through Swissvale to see his Nana’s old house. Paying a visit to old friends, and then heading to Ruby’s Submarines for a sandwich. No matter the success, Billy Gardell is humble and loyal to his roots.

His newest comedy special, “Halftime,” was filmed at the Byham Theater in Pittsburgh, where Billy said “It was like capturing a really incredible power in a bottle. Pittsburgh came out and supported me so well. It was like a tailgate party. There were Terrible Towels and people screaming. It was wonderful.” So, Billy Gardell’s love of Pittsburgh seems to be reciprocated.
