NHL Winter Classic Moved to 8pm Saturday Jan. 1
League changes Winter Classic start time
to 8pm ET Saturday
http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=547980&navid=DL|NHL|home
PITTSBURGH – The National Hockey League announced today the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic will change the original 1 p.m. (ET) start time on New Year's Day to 8 p.m. (ET). The decision was based on the latest meteorological reports, which have advised an approaching front of potentially steady rain expected to fall through the afternoon and taper off by early evening, and after consultation with the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Washington Capitals, national broadcast partners (NBC, CBC, RDS), the Pittsburgh Steelers, the National Hockey League Players' Association, and local officials.
We have been further advised that cooler and drier air conditions are expected in the evening with the passing of the front. The NHL feels that it was important to make this announcement at this time so as to minimize the inconvenience to all parties associated with the event, especially its fans.
All 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic tickets will continue to be honored and all ticket holder agreement language remains unchanged.
The following is a list of changes for FANS based on the new 8 p.m. (ET) start time:
Gates to Heinz Field will now open at 5:30 p.m. (ET)
Pre-game entertainment now begins at 7:30 p.m. (ET)
Heinz Field Parking Lots will now open at 2:30 p.m. (ET)
Spectator Plaza will now open at 3 p.m. (ET)
The following are the weather-related GAME procedure contingencies for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic:
Once the game has begun, it may be subject to one or more temporary stoppages due to unplayable weather conditions, at the discretion of the Commissioner.
Period and game format may be reconfigured to accommodate temporary stoppages as determined appropriate by the Commissioner.
The clubs will switch ends at the 10:00 minute mark of the third period as signaled by a "hard whistle." The face off will take place where the play was whistled dead. This identical procedure will take place at the 2:30 minute mark of an overtime period, if needed.
In the event of a shootout, each club will determine what end they prefer to defend, which could be the same end.
If the game is started, then stopped permanently due to unplayable weather conditions, it will be deemed "official" once two periods have been played. The team leading at the time play is stopped will be declared the winner and will be awarded two points in the standings.
If the game is tied at the time play is stopped permanently, any time after two periods of play, each team will be awarded one point in the standings, with an opportunity to earn an additional point in a standard shootout format.
If weather conditions permit, the shootout will be conducted at Heinz Field immediately after regulation play has been stopped. If weather conditions make it impossible to conduct a shootout safely at Heinz Field, the shootout will take place at Verizon Center on Sunday, February 6 prior to the regularly scheduled Pittsburgh-Washington game.
If the game is started, and stopped permanently due to unplayable weather conditions, and fewer than two periods of regular time has been played, the game will be officially "postponed" and, if possible, will be played in its entirety at Heinz Field on Sunday, January 2, beginning at 12 p.m. (ET). If the game cannot be replayed at Heinz Field on January 2, it will be rescheduled at CONSOL Energy Center for a date to be determined later in the season.
Ticket holders must retain their tickets to gain re-entry to Heinz Field in the event the game is to be played Sunday, January 2. There will be no refunds for ticket holders unable to attend Sunday's postponement date. If the event is canceled on Sunday, a refund of the ticket's face value will be honored. The refund does not include service fees, and other fees such as delivery or processing fees. Ticket holders should review the back of their ticket for complete refund policy language.

UPDATE:
NHL Announces Winter Classic Game Change Time to 8pm Est. Saturday Night Jan. 1st, 2011
Alumni Game | old time Pens featuring #66 Mario Lemieux vs. old time caps, Pens & Caps Practice.
PITTSBURGH - Today is day SIX of our "Seven Days to Saturday" 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic Coverage which is being held here in Pittsburgh at Heinz Field on Saturday, January 1, 2011 @ 1pm est.
As the year ends the days and hours melt away to Winter Classic. One day to go and a new day to come. Today brings a new addition the to Winter Classic week, the Alumni game. The brainchild of Pittsburgh Penguins president David Morehouse to add another fan festivity to the week the Alumni game is limited seating to only 10,000 tickets. Mario Lemieux is the main alumni attraction. Tons of former Penguins on the roster. The Capitals roster is pretty light with star names.
Final rosters set for Pens-Caps alumni game
Live Blogging Notes from the Press Box:
ALUMNI GAME Live Blog:
- Lots of Jerseys - not Steelers jersey's but Penguins sweaters. #87 mostly
- Scalpers asking $100-125 for a $20 face value ticket
- Fans trickle in at 9am
- The Alumni Pens and caps enter at 9:20am.
- The pens enter to their famous orchestral theme song.
- * The big guy #66 enters 2 minutes later to a roar of the crowd. (only about 50% of the 10,000 fans in their seats, shame they missed Mario enter.)
- ** A great touch as the recently passed away longtime Penguins arena announcer John Barbaro was the recorded introduction for Mario's entrance.
- Face-off at 9:31am
- Players are either wearing no helmets or knit pens or caps tuque's.
- Only one side of the stadium is being used. Still a light crowd. hmmm?
- Robbie Brown scores for the Pens at 4:22, assisted by who else #66 (what the heck he didn't do his famous past score windmill)
- ESPN NHL analyst Barry Melrose enters the press box. (the Mullet looks good)
- Quiet in the press box. Zzzzzzz. Kind of Wish I was down in the cold with the fans.
- Caps Score, Alan May (Who?) at 6:56 (1-1)
- Caps Score, Paul Mulvey (I remember him) (2-1)
- Pens Score, Rod Buskas (2-2)
- Pens Score, Craig Simpson (2-3)
- Caps Score, Lofthouse (3-2)
- Pens Score, Simpson again (3-3)
- Paul Coffey stills has fast wheels.
- END of first period. (3-3)
- The super genius sports talker Mark Madden enjoying a media coffee.
- Robbie Brown finally takes the ice and does his famous post score windmill to the roar of the crowd. (What took him so long)
- Bill Guerin interviewed says it is nice to be the young guy again. ha-ha
- I took a walk outside into the elements during the intermission break. Perfect outdoor hockey weather, i am sure they wish this was the actual classic game being played in this weather. I still have a good feeling that the weather will work out and the puck dropped at 1:28 Saturday. They were calling for a 45 degree day for the alumni game and it is kind of cold and brisk and cloudy. Fingers Crossed.
- The crowd has filled in the empty Heinz Field yellow seats nicely. Pretty full now.
- Once again so, so may hockey sweaters being worn and pens gear. Such a great supporting sports town this is. Much Pride.
- 2nd period facoff @ 10:18am est.
- Frank Pietrangelo in Goal for the Pens replacing Gilles Meloche.
- The old guys still moving pretty good. Nice passing and flow to the game.
- Caps Score, Paul Mulvey with his 2nd (4-3)
- 10:25am the sun is waking up and peaking through its crusty cloudy eyes.
- #66 has yet to score. I still feel he will get a hat trick as they will start feeding him the puck.
- Here comes more sun, looks beautiful
- Pens Score, Pens post game analyst and former tough guy Jay Caulfield scores. Trottier and troy Loney assist. (4-4)
- Nice to hear the sound of a real organ playing the stadium cheer music.
- There is former Flyer and Pen Rick Tocchet. Wonder if he has money on the game? Many folks said I looked like him back in the day.
- Crowd starts a loud LET'S GO PEN'S! chant with 6:32 left in the 2nd.
- What?! A penalty called on the Caps. There are no penalties in alumni games. ha-ha.
- Scary Gary Roberts tells the crowd what he would do.
- Pens Score, Ron Francis on the PP (5-4) #66 with an assist, still no goals. He will for sure score.
- I see some terrible towels out there.
- Caps Score. Peter Bondra (5-5)
- 1 Minute remaining in THE GAME. OOOP'S. I forgot this is not a full game. Mario will not get a hat trick any maybe not even a goal. Will there be a shootout? Pens Practice starts in 40 minutes.
- GAME OVER the CROWD BOOING THEY WANT A SHOOTOUT WITH MARIO.
- NOPE! Handshake Line. Game Over. Well this is a new game to the classic schedule and the most important things are practice time for the real teams and the game itself Saturday which counts in the standings.
- WOW! Mario did not score. Crowd a bit bummed and I think surprised the game was only 2 periods.
- The teams salute the crowd.
MARIO SPEAKS:
- Mario addressed the media in the briefing room.
- Mario looked good. He said he felt good and great to see may of the old guys from the cup days and skate with them. He praised Sid's leadership and the skill of Alexander Ovechkin. He was happy to assist on Robbie Browns 50th years later.
- I hit the stadium concourse area to mingle with the fans and to get some deep fried food. (Chicken Tenders and Fries)
- You can tell today is Mario's day. 70% of the Penguins game jerseys worn by fans sported 66.
- About 3/4 of the fans stayed for the Pens practice session on the outdoor ice.
- The crowd roared and chanted "Let's Go Pens!"
- 20 minutes into the hour practice the crowd is about 30% now.
- Barry Melrose and Steve Levy are recording their ESPN banter down on field level.
- Spoke with Announcer great Mike 'Doc' Emrick in the press elevator.
- Box Lunch served in the Press Box. Ham, Roast Beef or Turkey, hmmm should I eat again? I just had fan food.)
- Pens practice is not overly exciting but I a sure the guys are having a blast. A few guys are jostling and playing around and their is a real jump in their step as the big day is almost finally here. Again, perfect weather today.
- I went for the Roast Beef boxed lunch.
- Pens Practice ends at 12:45pm.
- The family skates is now in session. Very nice to let the family members of the players and staff hit the ice. Just as nice as it was to let us media skate yesterday.
- Following practice the players were able to have their family members join them on the ice for the family skate.
PENS LOCKER ROOM
- Crosby's locker was surrounded by reporters AND Sid wasn't even their. ha-ha He showed up 15 minutes later and that early swarm doubled.
- Ben Lovejoy's face is looking a bit better, not as swollen and giant as seen in HBO'S 24/7.
- Fluery, Talbot and Malkin along with Sid dominated the locker room attention.
- Coach Dan Bylsma briefed the media in the press room and talked about the matchup, the Caps impression shown on 24/7 of how to annoy Malkin, his battles with caps coach Bruce Boudreau since the minor league days and did not commit on weather Jordan Staal will make his season debut outdoors.
CAPS PRACTICE
- The Caps practice was light and fun. They were loose and enjoyed the moment.
- Following practice the players were able to have their family members join them on the ice for the family skate.
Well that is it folks. Time to call it a day and prepare for the turning of the clock and to maybe prepare for a very long warm and rainy Winter Classic day. Thanks for joining us all week, one more day to go in our 'Seven Days to Saturday" 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic Coverage. Check out our photo albums and raw video footage from the week. It’s easy, enjoyable, to count down the best of 2010. But how about the worst? Sometimes it’s even easier, even more enjoyable, to recall the worst of the past year. So, with the help of Entertainment Weekly, let us recall the worst of the past year...

Entertainment Weekly has some great taste in music, some of their favorites being Arcade Fire, Robyn, The Black Keys, and Laura Marling. But what about the music that was enough to make us swear off the idea of iPods? (Well, maybe not that bad, but you get the gist…)

The Clarks
The Clarks are one of Pittsburgh's most popular local bands. Their music can be described as a blend of rock, pop, alternative, and country. Their gritty live sound goes perfectly with their songs that tackle the hardships of everyday life. Although they are a local band, The Clarks have also developed strongholds in markets outside of the region, including Cleveland, Milwaukee, Chicago, Baltimore, DC, and New York. The Clarks have played at shows for well-known artists such as Steely Dan and 3 Doors Down. Their songs can be heard in the films "Boys" (with Winona Ryder) and "Just Write".
Over the past year, The Clarks have performed at over 200 shows. Tonight they will play their 2000th show at the new Stage AE on the North Shore of Pittsburgh. December 29th has been named "The Clarks Day" here in Pittsburgh, and talent network will be on the scene to report about this awesome accomplishment!

What do you guys think of the music evaluations for the year? I love that Scherer gave Mumford and Sons some love, and Billboard gave a much-deserved shout-out to MGMT for their second album Congratulations and to Mumford and Sons for their Sigh No More. If it isn't already obvious, I love me some MGMT and Mumford and Sons. As well as TIME's choice of The National's High Violet. But it doesn't matter what I think. What do you think? Let us know.

Winter Classic Fan Festival, Warhol Exhibit, Hockey Hall of Fame Exhibit
PITTSBURGH - Today is day THREE of our "Seven Days to Saturday" 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic Coverage which is being held here in Pittsburgh at Heinz Field on Saturday, January 1, 2011 @ 1pm est.
Today we bring you information about the NHL planned fan activities and exhibits happening on the North Shore near Heinz Field.
NHL TO CREATE FREE FAN FESTIVAL OUTSIDE OF HEINZ FIELD IN CELEBRATION OF 2011 BRIDGESTONE NHL WINTER CLASSIC
“Spectator Plaza” Offers a Host of Attractions for Fans of All Ages
NEW YORK (December 22, 2010) – The National Hockey League in conjunction with the City of Pittsburgh will extend the celebration of the New Year’s Day outdoor game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals with its official 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic® Spectator Plaza, a free, two-day fan festival just outside the gates of Heinz Field.
On Friday, Dec. 31 and Saturday, Jan. 1, Art Rooney Avenue and W. General Robinson Street will transform into an outdoor hockey and entertainment festival for fans of all ages with live musical performances, interactive hockey-themed attractions, prizing and giveaways, food, beverage and merchandise tents.
Weather permitting, Spectator Plaza will be open to the public from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. ET on Dec. 31 and from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on Jan. 1, just prior to the puck drop at the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic.
During the two-day festival, the Bud Light Beer Garden tents will be offering concessions to Spectator Plaza guests; visitors and fans can interact with roving stilt walkers, get their photos taken through “Fanfoto,” and have their faces painted and caricatures drawn on game day. Stilt walkers from Entertainment Unlimited will provide roving entertainment and McDonald’s will distribute samples of its McCafé specialty coffee beverages.
In addition to the merchandise areas throughout Spectator Plaza and Heinz Field, Dick’s Sporting Goods, the Official Retailer of the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic, will be selling NHL Winter Classic merchandise from a special pop-up trailer located on W. General Robinson Street. On Nov. 12, Dick’s opened a NHL Winter Classic store located in Pittsburgh’s historic Strip District that will be open daily through Dec. 31. This temporary store is carrying officially licensed Penguins and Capitals NHL Winter Classic merchandise.
Fans can test their shooting skills at the Bridgestone Slap Shot Activation in Spectator Plaza, where visitors will take to the ice to go one-on-one against a goalie from a youth league in the Pittsburgh area. Media is also invited to participate, and live shot and other stand-up opportunities can be arranged throughout the morning of Dec. 31.
Geico’s “cave” at Spectator Plaza will include a “Guess The Puck” contest for chances to win prizes and a remote control monster truck obstacle course. The Caveman will also be onsite, interacting with fans at Spectator Plaza and filming video throughout Heinz Field for four webisodes that will be available at NHL.com.
Inspired by Sidney Crosby’s favorite childhood pastime of shooting pucks into a clothes dryer in his parents’ basement – and in homage to the popular television commercial that debuted earlier this year – Reebok will invite fans to do the same at its Zigloo activation area within Spectator Plaza.
Upper Deck will provide the opportunity for fans to create their own personal hockey trading card and Verizon Wireless will give fans the chance to become hockey stars and create their own NHL Winter Classic-themed ad. Verizon Wireless will also host demonstrations of the new NHL GameCenter LIVE mobile application on Verizon handsets.
Cisco will offer fans the opportunity to experience Cisco ūmiTM telepresence, a first-of-its-kind consumer product that brings family and friends together in HD video, whether they are around the corner or across the country, in a living room-styled RV at Spectator Plaza.
Honda will showcase the all-new 2011 Honda CR-Z, Odyssey and the Accord Crosstour at Spectator Plaza and host NHL alumnus Pat LaFontaine at the Honda Tent for a special autograph session on Dec. 31 beginning at 3:00 p.m.
On Dec. 31, the day’s events begin at 8:30 a.m. and will include the exclusive live NHL NetworkTM broadcast of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals team practices from Heinz Field, which fans can watch on the jumbo video screen at Spectator Plaza.
Game-day festivities begin at Spectator Plaza at 9:00 a.m. on Jan. 1 and will include a live performance by local cover band Tokyo Radio from 10:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. A hockey-themed ice sculpture will be created by Mastro Gourmet Quality Ice.

Warhol: The Art of Play Exhibit
The Andy Warhol Museum’s The Art of Play is an exhibition of youth artwork on the importance of play, sports and physical fitness. Youth explored themes such as sportsmanship, teamwork, and the role of the sports celebrity in contemporary culture. The first part of The Art of Play is a juried exhibition of youth digital artwork. Youth from around the region participated. In addition, local animators, The Schmutz Company worked with after-school programs to create stop motion animations. The second part of the exhibition is a suite of prints created by students from Pittsburgh’s High School for the Creative and Performing Arts, which uses Sarah Heinz House athletic teams as their muse. The Warhol’s Eric Shiner, Milton Fine Curator of Art juried the exhibition.
