"Show Tips" with David Sedelmeier: Comedy and Fundraisers

“Show Tips” is a weekly insight with David Sedelmeier, owner of talent network, inc., parent company and entertainment booking agency that handles events all over the world. “Show Tips” is a live interview with David in which he shares his insights and experiences about entertainment and performers as well as his tips on how to enhance your event. This week, we'll be talking about comedy and fundraisers.

Why a comedy show for a fundraiser?
Fundraisers are always looking for something unique to find ways to generate revenue - to get people to attend. We came up with the idea of doing them as comedy nights. Some of the outlying areas outside the city are kind of starved for entertainment, so we found that if you could get a good venue and put on a good-name comedian, people will be very interested in coming to the event. Besides generating revenue from the ticket sales, and there are some other means that we can creatively extract some money from guests while they're there, too.

Common fundraiser concern: How will you generate revenue?
There are a couple different ways: Mainly it's through the door/ticket with charge to get into the event. Sometimes, you want to have a name comedian to have such a profile that it is a drawing card. The other aspect is to just sell the concept of a comedy night.

The big thing is, to make sure it's a good comedian, and that's where our job comes in. We go out and see each comedian that we book. We know the essence of their routines. And we want to make sure that they're the type of comedian suited for the audience.

How do you make a comedy night successful?
This is a question we take a lot of time to try and explain to our clients. Comedy is kind of odd; it is a fragile art. For it to be successful, there are a couple different factors. One of them is the setting of the room.

Why is the setting of the room important?
Some of these private affairs will have a DJ and a band, and the comedian is going on after dinner; so he's up on stage, and there's this big dance floor and the first audience member is 30 or 40 feet away. All the houselights are up and the sound system is in-house in-the-ceiling speakers, and that's all a recipe for disaster. I don't care how good the comedian is.

So what should the setting/atmosphere of the room be?
Comedy is about intimacy; it's about a performer very close to you, telling jokes and stories, and you have to feel comfortable. You need a good quality sound system, so everyone can hear what the comedian is saying, and the audience needs to be as close to the stage and at as small of tables as humanly possible; sometimes that's a challenge at venues where they have 8 and 10 tops, but if you can do the 4 tops or the 6 tops, it helps with people's table talk, so they're not talking amongst themselves as much.

How do you get the audience's attention?
Stage lighting is vital, so when the lights go down, your visual focal point becomes where the light is, and you're visually drawn to the stage. These are the little things that we try to put in there, and now the comedian has the proper atmosphere to create a successful show.

What is the importance of the opening act?
We feel it is extremely important to have someone to warm up the crowd, set the stage, get the crowd acclimated to what's coming. We've seen dramatically different results in the response of the crowd to the headliner when we've had an opening act. All of our headlining comedians love the fact that we put openers with them on private shows and college shows.

What are some characteristics of the opening act?
We call it "taking the bullet" because it's not an easy gig: you're the first guy out on stage; you're trying to get the crowd to pay attention to you; people are still finishing dessert and talking, so it's tough, but the talented ones kind of win them over. No one usually raves about the opening act, but his job is to make the headliner look good. So when the headliner gets that standing ovation, part of that is because that opening act did such a good job.

Do you try and match up similar styles; do you try and get comedians that are similar?
We try and get comedians that aren't going to conflict. If you get a Mark Eddie that is doing songs and impressions, I'm not going to put an impressionist type comedian in front of him, and I'm not going to put a musical act in front of him. If a comedian is a magical type, I'm not going to put a magician in front of him. With openers, you generally like energy; you like somebody that's kind of like the guys that do the game show warm-ups.

How do you know if a comedy night is successful?
With comedy, you kind of know right away: if the people are applauding, on their feet, and wanting more. There isn't a lot of mystery to the success of a comedy show.

Do you think you know within the first few minutes?
No. With some comedians, like a Rocky LaPorte, who I think is one of the most talented comedians, it takes awhile. Listening to him, you go "what is this?" But the next thing you know, you're absolutely loving everything he's saying. Other people, like a Mark Eddie, walk out and they're instantly funny because you just marvel at how he can acclimate so quickly. Greg Hahn is someone with tremendous energy, and it's funny but it's kind of odd and then it gets really funny and then it gets hysterical because it's just this monster energy. He's a hard act to follow.

When it comes to a fundraiser, why comedy?
There are a lot of things to do as a fundraiser, and we've done them all. The reason we like comedy is because if you deliver a good quality comedy show, it's something that you can set up on a quarterly or semi-quarterly or annual basis in which people are intrigued to come back to. Comedy is extremely popular; it breaks all the boundaries. Everybody loves to laugh.

"Show Tips" with David Sedelmeier: Corporate Comedy

    Nov. 16, 2010

"Show Tips" is a weekly insight with David Sedelmeier, owner of talent network, inc., parent company and entertainment booking agency that handles events all over the world. "Show Tips" is a live interview with David in which he shares his insights and experiences about entertainment and performers as well as his tips on how to enhance your event. This week, we'll be talking about Corporate Comedy...

    ShowTips

Why are comedy shows popular for corporate/private events?
Everybody wants to laugh; it transcends people's age, music styles, and so forth. Comedy is a fully embracing type of show. The challenge is, you have to get the right comic for the audience.

What is the average audience at a corporate event?
It's really all over the place; that's why we try to get as much information from our client as possible. We can do an American Eagle event, and everyone is skewed younger. Or we can do a client where everyone is 55 and older. So you want to tailor the comedian that would be suited for that audience if possible.

So, you first ask the client "what is the age range; what are the people like?"
Yes, we ask a series of questions: how many people are attending, if we can get any kind of demographic material, how old they are, are the wives going to be there, is it all employees, is it clients, a variety of things. We also want to know what they've done in the past, as well as what else is going on there: are there going to be awards, will the audience be seated and able to be captured for stage show, etc.

So, how do you make the determination of who to book?
After we ascertain all of that information, then we start to kind of get a feel for what they're looking for, and we start to give them some ideas. We've been fortunate; we've had really good shows with comedy for our corporate clients. The main reason is that we're really particular about who we pitch: we see every comedian that we would recommend, so we know more than just their two minute routine on YouTube; we know everything about their routine.

Has YouTube changed the way things work for you?
Big time. We used to have to send the tapes out to people, and they would then review them. There's always been a videotape component to it; this makes it a lot faster and easier.

What type of venues do you use for a corporate/private event?
They really can work in any venue, but this is an important part of what we try to educate our buyer on. Comedy is tough when you don't have the mechanisms in place that a comedy club has. People go to a comedy club and see a comedian kill, and they say "oh, he was so good," and then they see him at a private party and they say "ah, he wasn't funny at all." Well, the house lights were up; you couldn't see him; the sound system was bad so you couldn't hear him. All these things need to be in place. We try to mimic that same thing that comedy clubs do: small tables, close to the stage because it's important to get the comedian as close to the people as possible; kill the houselights, it quiets the crowd, and a quality sound system so people can actually hear him well.

And along with the comedian, you need the opening act?
Not everyone does, but we choose to push it. The comedians that we deal with love that because it emulates the comedy club format: you get someone out there, and you get the crowd acclimated to what's going on, getting their attention, getting them revved up for the show.

Are there any other criteria for booking a comedic act for a corporate/private show?
You have to know the act, and you have to know the client, and you have to know what the client's expectations are. Comedy is about having fun, and it's about a party. He's out there to bring levity, to take you away from your daily stresses, and to make you laugh. If you create the scenarios that we just described, and put the people in that kind of mindset, then the comedian will do a great job.

Is that why you would choose it for a corporate event? Because it's for a "party?"
It's very popular, and we've had great success with it. I think that if you have the right comedian, if you have someone that masterful up there to make you laugh, there's almost no better entertainment.

Using The Internet To Throw A Party? Yes, Says Popular Science

    Nov. 16, 2010

    ---
Who doesn't love a party at this time of year? And with the overwhelming impact of the Internet on our everyday lives, why shouldn't it play a part in our party planning strategies? Popular Science's Amanda Schupak explores "5 Things You Need To Throw a Holiday Party," and the internet is a vital part of each one.

    Holiday Party Planning Tips
#1 is to Stock the Bar: using Thatsthespirit.com, you can figure out how much alcohol to buy and what it will cost by using the website's party calculator.

#2 is to Vote the Rock: using SongVote.com, you can figure out what songs your guests want to hear. The website runs a mock "contest" in which your friends nominate songs and vote on one another's selections. SongVote.com will send you the results with links to the songs if you want to buy them to play at your holiday party.

#3 is to Sing Along: using ultrastardeluxe.org, the free-to-download game akin to PlayStation's SingStar, you can have karaoke at your party. With Ultra Star Deluxe, you can use the MP3's you already have or the songs already created by other users.

#4 is to Capture the Moment: using partyboothapp.com, you can literally turn your computer into a photo booth. The software is $60 after a free trial and uses your webcam to create those beloved photo strips.

#5 is Act Out: using the Speed Charades iPhone app, you’ll get more than 1,000 words to act out. The game keeps track of both time and which words have been used, so things stay interesting.

Are you going to use the Internet to your party planning advantage this holiday season? Share with us some of your own ideas.

    Magician Lee Terbosic

How was your trip to LA?
It was awesome; I had a super great time. It was about 90 degrees when I left, and when I it was 29 degrees when I landed here, but LA totally rocked. I had an awesome time.

    Pat Tillman event…
The Pat Tillman event was off the charts. I can't think of a better event I've ever done…just with the amount of celebrities and press and it being for a great cause. I got to meet Mrs. Tillman briefly, and Robby Krieger of The Doors was super nice. And I even jumped outside to watch a little bit of the show.

Gene Simmons Lee Terbosic Pat Tillman Foundation

What was it like doing magic for Gene Simmons?
I had a really cool encounter with Gene. I was in the green room, walking around, meeting a couple of the other people, and in walks Gene Simmons, his wife Shannon Tweed, and their son Nick. They did some photos; they said hi to some people; they shook some hands, but then they were kind of left alone. People just let them be. They sat at a table, just like a family would at dinner, and they had some sushi, and they were just kind of hanging out. Nobody was talking to them, and I could tell that they looked kind of bored, and I figured, the stars aligned, and this is what I'm supposed to do. So, I just jumped up, walked over, shook their hands, told them who I was, and just said "Hey, I'd like to show you something really crazy with some money." And I turned some $1's into $100's, and I did a few tricks for them. Gene was like "keep going. I want to see more." And then, before I knew it, I had Gene Simmons literally walking me around the green room as my intro, just grabbing people, going "hey man, have you seen this guy? Did you see what he can do with the money? Or what he can do with the cards?" He knew my act at that point; he had been with me for a half-hour at that point, and he asked me, "hey, we're going to do it again. We're going to get the video guys in. So I want you to do the exact same material that you just did for my family." And I was like, "Gene, you've already seen it all." And he goes, "No, no, no, don't worry. I'll fake all the reactions." And he did. They brought the whole Family Jewels camera crew in, and they filmed me doing magic for the family. And Gene was faking all the reactions. I put his phone in a balloon. That's one of my go-to tricks: I take your cell phone, I put it inside of a balloon, and I joke and say "practice safe texts." He had seen it four times by then, but he was still like "Oh my god! I can't believe it!" It was really funny; it was really cool. I slipped him my card, and they said "hopefully they'll use the footage and maybe put you on the show."

So, you have go-to tricks that you know you're going to use?
Yeah, openers are so important in what I do because once you get into the really good opener and impress people, then you can get into some of the more fun, intricate stuff. I would say, for the openers, I have three or four that I always like to use.

That trick you did for me where you put my name on the bill…unbelievable. I still have that bill.
Name on the bill, yeah. That is a really, really special effect. That's something I won't be doing all the time, but I would definitely do in those situations. But I have a really cool opening card trick where I can hand someone a deck of cards, ask them to shuffle, and then, from a shuffled deck of cards - that the spectator got to shuffle - I can literally cut to all four aces, one being better each time. And that's pretty impressive because, obviously, they get to shuffle the deck. The last one would probably be the cell phone: that day I got to put Robby Krieger's cell phone in a balloon; I got to put Gene Simmons' cell phone in a balloon; I put two legendary rockers' cell phones in balloons within an hour.

    Lee Terbosic Gene Simmons

You've done the Steelers' events and all these high-profile events, what's it like when you work with celebrities that you're trying to entertain?
It's unique; you have to be very cautious with my kind of talent going in to perform for those guys. You really just pick and choose the opportunities when you see them. If they're deep in conversations with other celebrities, they might be networking or doing something very important, so I always look for the people that may be are not talking or there's that moment where the conversation breaks and I can jump in, introduce myself, and then it's boom, right into some really killer material just to get them on my side very quickly because then I'm going to make them want to see more.

Is there anyone you would feel uncomfortable in front of?
Yeah, probably Mel Gibson. I heard Marilyn Manson is very cool; he loves magic and he hangs out at The Magic Castle, but I could see performing for him could be kind of weird, just because of his whole persona.

What celebrity would you like to mystify?
I've always had a list of celebrities that I would like to, a top five list. One being Will Ferrell: I think Will Ferrell would be super fun, just hang out and do a couple of fun things with because he's so spontaneous and crazy. Two would be Steven Spielberg: only because he's created some of the most interesting movies of our time, and he totally understands magic. Jennifer Aniston would be awesome, Rachel from Friends, come on. Another would be Tom Hanks because I've heard he's such a nice guy. But lastly, Dave Matthews: I've always been a big fan of Dave, and he's always been at the top of my list of guys that, if I ever had an opportunity, I am not going to shy away from it, I am going to try and go in and do something for him, for sure.

Well, we'll work on that one for next time.

Derrick and Kenny offer up high praise and welcome to the podcast a man who is no longer a myth but a Gulag legend, Brandon Drake Nelson (pictured).  Brandon calls out his red teammates especially Brad, talks about his slipper fight with Ty,  wonders what's on Paula's chin, and his breaks down his battle with Derrick n the Gulag.

    Brandon's MTV.com Bio
Derrick Kosinski Podcast MTV Cutthroat Brandon NelsonLast seen getting disqualified for drinking a beer before an Exile on Fresh Meat 2, Brandon is convinced that his performance will speak for itself this time around. He confidently explains, "You don't have to get into the politics of backstabbing, lying to people, and cutting deals. I think you can just play the game as hard as you can." That's all well and good, but the name of this game is Cutthroat! Although Brandon isn't Fresh Meat anymore, it sounds like this Arkansas native still has a lot to learn about The Challenge.

"Talent Talks" with Mark Eddie: Playing with Gene Simmons and Robby Krieger

This is "Talent Talks," a live conversation between the artist and David Sedelmeier that covers everything from being an entertainer to unique and interesting shows they've done. "Talent Talks" is a real insight from behind the curtain, and today we're talking to rock comic Mark Eddie.

You recently performed at the Pat Tillman Foundation event…
The big event for the Pat Tillman Foundation Annual Golf Tournament/Rock Concert is put on by two of my really great friends: Scotty Medlock, a PGA commissioned artist, he's phenomenal, you can check him out on http://www.scottmedlock.com/, and then my good friend, founding member of The Doors, Mr. Robby Krieger, legendary guitarist and Rock And Rock Hall of Fame member, and Gene Simmons.

This was the third year you've done it, right?
Yes, this was the third annual. The first year was very small; it was kind of intimate; they were just getting a feel for it. I was actually the MC, the auctioneer, and everything for that year. And last year, the second annual, I performed a full 20 minute set upfront, and I introduced The Doors. This year, doing that spot was Gary Mule Deer, who is a legendary musical comedian.

He's good, he's been around a long time.
50 years! 50 years in comedy. He's 71-years-old and proud of it. And he's touring like crazy; he had his busiest year ever last year: he toured with Vince Gill and the Zac Brown Band.

What was it like to meet Gene Simmons, who I hear is one of your childhood idols?
Gene Simmons, oh my god. I walk right into the green room and then I'm sitting there with Gene Simmons, his beautiful wife, Shannon Tweed, his son Nick, and just a couple of their friends, and we're all sitting around there chatting, watching the final game of the World Series together. Lee Terbosic is in there doing magic for him. He's shopping Lee around the room.

Wasn't he a key component as to why you got involved in music?
Of course! I used to dress up like KISS. I used to put the makeup on; I was part of the KISS army.

      Did you tell him that?
I did, I told him. He said, "then, this is probably kind of a good time for you." I said, "Absolutely! Are you kidding me? I'm sitting here with one of my idols!" He said, "No, I put my pants on just like you do."

Is Gene still a good musician? Is he just as good as he used to be?
Incredible. He picked up that bass guitar, and you could just feel it. He was playing licks like you wouldn't believe. He sat in on a couple of songs, Doors' songs. His son is a remarkable singer; he did a couple of classic Doors' songs, and they did an incredible version of "Roadhouse Blues" together.

Lee Terbosic Robby Krieger Mark Eddie Pat Tillman Foundation
Lee Terbosic, Robby Krieger, and Mark Eddie at Pat Tillman Foundation event.

      What songs did you do?
Well, at rehearsal on Sunday night, they're teaching Robbie "Rock & Roll All Nite." So, Robby Krieger, a rock legend is up there, learning a song, and he's just so overwhelmed by everything because he's in charge of the whole golf tournament, too. And Robbie looks at me and goes "do you know this song?" And I'm like, "Bobby, are you kidding me? I'm a huge KISS fan; I know this song." He goes, "Then you just play it; I'll just give you my guitar," and he never lets anyone play his guitar. So he takes his guitar and says, "you play the song; I want you to play it with him." So, I did "Rock & Roll All Nite."

      What's your favorite KISS song?
That's probably my favorite KISS song: "Rock & Roll all Nite." And there's "Black Diamond." There are some other really good ones too: "Hard Luck Woman," and "Beth" is a classic ballad. I love everything.

That's a pretty big credential to be onstage with two guys that you idolize: The Doors and KISS all at one moment..
Surreal, absolutely surreal. The whole day. I looked at Cindy in the morning before I left the house and I'm like, I'm going to CBS Radford; I'm going to be on the set all day today, playing a detective on CSI: NY. And then I'm heading over to Moorpark Country Club where I'm going to jam onstage with Gene Simmons and Robby Krieger. That's the kind of day you want to hold onto forever.

Did Gene Simmons live up to what you thought he'd be?
Yes. Everything and more. He was so nice, so kind. I thought, this guy has had to have met a billion fans in his lifetime and probably been in this situation hundreds of times, where you're at a charity event and you're getting approached by anybody and everybody, but he was so gracious, so kind, and so nice. And Robby, as always, is probably one of the kindest men on the planet. He's just so laidback and easygoing. And that's how Gene was.

Now that you've played with Gene Simmons, who is next on your list to play with?
I would say Bob Dylan, and he was supposed to show up this year, and couldn't, and last year he was supposed to show up, and also couldn't. There were very good reasons as to why he wasn't able to show up; it just happened to be bad timing. They used a quote from a Dylan song in the program and the backdrop for the night: "I think of a hero as someone who understands the degree of responsibility that comes with his freedom."

      Would you impersonate him?
I would definitely do him for him!

It's even more impressive for you because you're actually performing with them.
Yeah, share the stage, play some songs. I'm on cloud nine; I still haven't come down.
