First Day in Steelers Camp - a Craig Wolfley Blog Post

Well here it is. The first day of the Pittsburgh Steelers training camp. First days are always interesting, whether it be like in the past, when Tunch Ilkin picked me up at my house and got stung by a bee, only to have his eye swell up like the "Elephant Man" which looked hilarious in his helmet (and quite painful too).
Or the year i walked into my dorm room with all my junk and Tunch was sitting there on his bed, well actually not sitting as he was upside down doing a headstand and chanting stupidly. He said he was meditating. I figured one day into camp and he's already lost his mind.

1st Annual "Guitars Over Cancer" a Huge Success

1ST ANNUAL "GUITARS OVER CANCER" A HUGE SUCCESS
PITTSBURGH -This past January, Mr Lee, a Pittsburgh concert and radio producer/DJ, said the success of the 1st annual "Guitars Over Cancer" concert, to raise money for cancer charities, would be measured in two ways; the amount of money raised and the quality of the entertainment. Lee reports that both were accomplished beyond expectations.
Pittsburgh's rock and blues all stars came out in full force on June 13 to honor the late, long-time Pittsburgh guitarist, Warren "Kingfish" King, who died of liver cancer in January.
Billy Price, Norman Nardini, Shari Richards, Gil Snyder, Bill Toms, Ernie Hawkins, Gary Beloma, Frank Czuri, the Granati Brothers, Kenny Blake, Don Hollowood, Glenn Pavone, James Dougherty, Guitar Zack, Marc Reisman, Craig King, and a host of others brought the house down at Altar Bar in the Strip, and helped raise almost $14,000, to benefit the Mario Lemieux Foundation, Susan G Komen For the Cure and the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
"I've listened to, jammed with, and filmed these artists over decades, and I've never heard them play more inspired than they were that night," Lee says. "They made the gig a grand success. Everyone connected with the event donated their time and talents. Norman and Gilbert put together a great 4-hour show."
KDKA's Dave Crawley, a recent cancer survivor himself, was the emcee and introduced musical director Gil Snyder and the Mystic Knights to the stage early on, who served as the house band backing up guitarists Craig King, Don Hollowood, James Dougherty, Randall Troy and local guitar hero Glenn Pavone. Pavone is in the midst of his own personal battle with cancer.
Midway through the show, Marc Reisman and Ernie Hawkins took the stage for a brief acoustic set before harp player Reisman and guitarist/singer Bill Toms, ex-Houserockers, rocked the house. That led way to stage host Norman Nardini and his band backing up singers Billy Price, Gary Beloma, Shari Richards (with sax man Kenny Blake sitting in) and Frank Czuri, the lead singer of King's 1979 band, the Silencers.
To end the show, keyboardist Hermie Granati and his percussionist brother Rick (along with Nardini, Richards, Blake and guitar wiz Zack Wiesinger) sent the crowd into a tizzy with a 15-minute rendition of Steve Winwood's "I'm a Man," that still resonates as of this writing.
Interspersed throughout the evening were a dozen film clips projected on nine screens of Warren King and friends, all playing various gigs as far back as 1979, filmed at the time by Lee. Most of those friends were on stage to honor the Kingfish.
Some of the items donated to the cause were from the Lemieux Foundation, Blues Festival, Sportzburgh, Cha-Ching, Hofbrauhaus, Marriott, House of Two Sisters, Pennsylvania Mac, Dawn's Designs, Stray Cat Candles, Identity Salon, City Theatre, among others. They were auctioned, raffled and given away throughout the evening, which went a long way into raising nearly $14,000.
While a nice sum of money was raised that night, a greater amount donated came from the employees of BNY Mellon, who participated in supporting the event by purchasing a "jeans pass" for $50, with a $25 match from BNY Mellon corporate. A jeans pass entitles employees to wear jeans to work for four months. They did so in support of Lynn Lucchino, King’s girlfriend and Mellon employee.
Lee is playing for at least $25,000 at next years concert. "It would be great if we had no one to honor next year because no one was fighting or succumbing to cancer" he says. "Maybe these gigs will make a difference in that. And one does not have to be gone for us to honor them. Why do we have to wait to lose someone to honor them?"

5 Myths About Satellite TV Debunked

5 Myths About Satellite TV Debunked
Satellite TV providers have done a reasonably good job trying to fight several of the common myths about satellite TV but they still have some ground to cover with consumers. For whatever reason there still is quite a bit of negative publicity surrounding satellite TV services. Obviously we are a pro satellite site but I wanted to try and tackle the top myths as I see them.
Myth #1 – Satellite TV is more expensive than other types of television service (cable TV, FIOS, U-Verse, etc.). This couldn’t be more incorrect. The monthly costs associated even with DishNetwork can cost as little as $20 per month (basic package with no premium upgrades). This compares very favorably to basic cable service across the U.S. If you get FTA satellite service, then your monthly drops to next to nothing (in some cases literally nothing).

If you're a fan of the Rolling Stones, a new form of entertainment is coming your way: guitarist, Ronnie Wood, is showing off his artistic skills in the form of paintings and other art that will be featured in the Butler Institute of American Art in Ohio, a little over an hour away from Pittsburgh. In an article for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Wood is said to have picked up a paint brush before having ever picked up a guitar, and his artistic ability is described, by the Butler curator and director, Louis Zona, as "lively and appealing." The exhibition will include "30 of Wood's paintings, 22 pen-and-pencil drawings and seven mixed-media works." It will open on September 21 (and continue through November 21), and this is the first exhibition opening for Wood at a major American museum; Wood plans on attending.

Talent Network at the 2011 Winter Classic Press Conference at Heinz Field
July 27, 2010
Posted By - Lauren Norris and Emma Venezie
---
Although it may be hard to imagine falling snow and bitter temperatures while in the midst of this July heat, that’s exactly what a lot of Pittsburgh was talking about today. Beginning on January 1, 2008, the NHL began an annual tradition of holding a regular season game on New Year’s Day on an outdoor ice rink. The Penguins played in that inaugural game against the Buffalo Sabres and won in a shootout, with much of the game being played during a swirling snowstorm. Since then, the game has been held in Chicago at Wrigley Field and in Boston at Fenway Park. The NHL 2011 Winter Classic official press conference took place today at Heinz Field, which will be the site of the game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals on January 1, 2011. Talent Network was among the media in attendance, and is thrilled to be able to bring you a behind-the-scenes recap of the event.
The press conference was emceed by Doc Emerick and in attendance were NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, Penguins Owner Mario Lemieux, Penguins President David Morehouse, Penguins General Manager Ray Shero, Steelers President Art Rooney II, Mayor of Pittsburgh Luke Ravenstahl, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato, Penguins players Sidney Crosby, Max Talbot, and Pascal Dupuis, Capitals President Dick Patrick, Capitals General Manager George McPhee and Capital players Mike Knuble and David Steckel. Behind the platform hung banners, unveiling the 2011 Winter Classic logo, as well as retro logos for both the Capitals and the Penguins. Although team uniforms were not revealed (as many hoped would be), the retro logos may be a good indication that there could be throwback uniforms worn by each team for the game.
When we first arrived, we were directed to the club level which overlooks the field. Here, we were able to take aerial photos of how the field is to be set up for the 2011 Winter Classic game. After we took some pictures, we checked back in to the Media Room, and waited for 'game time.' The press conference was held outside, in the middle of the field, exactly where the rink will be set up for the game in January. It was admittedly hard to imagine a frozen hockey rink in the middle of the field while the sun was beating down on us, but it was awesome to see the layout for what should be an epic game.
Art Rooney II, Steelers President, spoke about his trepidation regarding building the ice rink on the field and then being able to remove it in time for the remainder of the football season. He said his worries were quickly calmed by the NHL, and he is now excited and proud to host the NHL and the Penguins for the 2011 Winter Classic. This Winter Classic should be one for the record books, as attendance is expected to be the second largest in the game’s 4 year history. The 2008 Winter Classic, held at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo, NY, had 71, 217 people in attendance, the most-ever to watch an NHL game live. The 2011 Winter Classic should come in second, as Heinz Field holds 65,050, with the 2009 game at Wrigley Field in Chicago coming in third with 40,818 in attendance, and 2010's Winter Classic at Fenway Park coming in fourth with 38,112 in attendance.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman pointed out, "If you love rivalries, Capitals/Penguins may be our best." He said that the demand for tickets for the Winter Classic games usually reaches into the hundreds of thousands, and tickets always sell out. He instructed fans that the best way to get tickets, and receive information alerts about ticket sales, is to sign up on NHL.com for 'Winter Classic Alerts'. And it's best not to miss out, because, as Bettman says, this game is "a must-see moment."
Through the 2011 Winter Classic, David Morehouse proclaimed that “we finally found a way to get the Steelers and the Penguins together." And though Pittsburgh is generally known as a football town, Morehouse says that "Pittsburgh has now become a hockey town, and it will always be a hockey town." He may be biased, but there is research to prove he’s onto something. ESPN the Magazine recently released their “Ultimate Standings 2010” – a ranking of all 122 professional sports franchises in the U.S. and Canada in the following categories: Bang for the Buck, Fan Relations, Ownership, Affordability, Stadium Experience, Players, Coaches and Title Track. The Pittsburgh Penguins were ranked #5 overall, among all teams and leagues (the Steelers were ranked #28) and #1 in fan relations, #3 in ownership, #5 in players, and #5 in title track.
The 2011 Winter Classic should prove to be a real boost for the city, and it will not be merely a one day event; it will be a "week-long celebration of hockey in Pittsburgh," according to Morehouse. It will include the city's youth and high school hockey teams utilizing outdoor ice facilities around the city, "as it was supposed to be played," according to County Executive Dan Onorato.
The last to speak was the Washington Capitals President, Dick Patrick, who said that the team is excited to be included in the 2011 Winter Classic and knows that the city of Pittsburgh will be hospitable. He predicted "a lot of red shirts in those gold seats”; hopefully Pittsburgh fans can snatch up tickets quickly and prove him wrong!
After the press conference, there was a group photo, and then the group moved onto the field where interviews were taking place. There were a few more photo ops before a 'puck-field goal' contest was held between the players. There was a launching pad set up on the field facing one of the goal posts and the players had to shoot the puck through the uprights. It was a lot of fun to watch and, as most people would expect, Sid shot a puck through from the 50 yard line!
As we walked off the field, goodie boxes full of gifts were handed to us. In them were hats, t-shirts, felt pendants, and miniature hockey sticks, all with the 2011 Winter Classic logo on them. Not to be made to feel left out, Crosby, Dupuis and Talbot were all given the same gift boxes.
I know it’s hard to imagine ice and snow outside in the middle of this summer heat wave, but who’s ready for hockey and pumped for the game?!

Darker Twists on Fairytale Favorites

---The eccentric, dark brilliance of Tim Burton seems to have started a trend with his live-action Alice in Wonderland. With Burton's movie grossing over $1 billion worldwide, studios are now ready for darker adaptations of fairytale heroines. As a huge fan of pretty much everything Tim Burton, I'm more than happy about the news. In Entertainment Weekly's July 23 issue, Adam Markovitz previews some of the new twists on classic characters:

Snow White: Producer Brett Ratner (director of Rush Hour 3) is said to have promised to honor the Brother Grimms' story, which means that the Queen will order a huntsman to kill Snow White and bring back her heart, but when he's unable to, he brings back the heart of a young deer. Regardless, the Queen will cook and eat it, believing she is eating the heart of Snow White. Yum. And then there's the part where the Queen is punished for her wickedness and forced to dance in a pair of heated iron shoes until she falls down dead. Exciting tidbit: the movie will be shot in 3-D.
