Salsamba

Salsamba is a Latin jazz quintet that blends the traditions of American jazz with the spicy rhythms of Cuba, Brazil, and the Caribbean - the result is great music that delights the listener with it’s originality. Based in Pittsburgh, Salsamba performs at clubs, festivals and colleges throughout the United States. They have opened for Latin jazz king Tito Puente, guitarists John Scofield and Stanley Jordan, Steel Pan player Andy Narell, and flutist Dave Valentin. Salsamba’s CDs, “Mambo in Blue”, Mambo Del Sol” and “Latinventions” have received considerable airplay nationwide. The band are featured performers on National Public Radio’s American Jazz Radio Festival, which airs nationwide on over 125 stations. This 5-piece band can also be joined by a female vocalist if so desired.

We got a chance to catch up with Salsamba and get a behind-the-scenes look at who they are!

talent network: How long has the group been together? How many people are in the group?
Salsamba: There are 5 people in the group. Salsamba has been a band since 1984 (26 years) Eric Susoeff (guitar, leader), George Jones (congas, co-leader), Eric Defade (sax/flute) 16 years, Paul Thompson (bass) 10 years, Thomas Wendt (drums) 5 years.

talent network: Name one of your favorite gigs you've played and why.
Salsamba: We have been lucky to play a lot of nice gigs in our 26 year history including many College, Festival, Night Club and TV appearances. Picking one? Recently we played a concert in San Antonio, TX, it was a fun gig and the hang was great.

talent network: What is one of your favorite venues to play at in Pittsburgh?
Salsamba: Katz Plaza on the corner of 7th and Penn Avenue downtown. We will be appearing there on July 27th from 5pm-7pm. It is a nice setting and the audiences really listen.

talent network: What kind of music does Salsamba play?
Salsamba: We play Latin Jazz music. We combine the traditions of American jazz with the rhythms of Latin America.

talent network: Who are your top influences?
Salsamba: Cal Tjader, Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Clare Fisher

Penguins news in the summer...can it get any better?

June 29, 2010

Although the season is over, this week has been filled with nothing but good news concerning the Penguins. The 2010-2011 regular season schedule has just been released, and on October 7, 2010, the Consol Energy Center will open its doors as the Penguins host the reigning Eastern Conference Champions, and rivals, the Philadelphia Flyers. This match-up that will surely get the 18,000 fans going, and it will be enjoyable for those on and off the ice. The opening of the new arena has been anticipated for what seems like years, and it will finally be open for all of the Penguins fans to cheer on their favorite players.

There are a couple notable games this season: First, there is the opening game which I mentioned above. The Philadelphia Flyers bring the rivalry to town, and they will have to face an additional 1,000 screaming and chanting die-hard fans.

Another pivotal point in the schedule is the very popular Winter Classic, which will be held at Heinz Field on January 1. This game is hosting another rival of ours: the infamous Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals. This game will gain national attention and Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin will face off as not only for face-offs but for the title of the “face of the NHL,” which is always a common topic for hockey lovers. Hopefully Heinz Field will bring the Penguins as much luck as it has brought the Steelers, and the question of whom the face of the NHL will finally be put to rest.

Here’s a little recent fact about the Winter Classic: the team who wins the game goes on to win the Stanley Cup the next year. I back this up by saying that the Penguins won in 2008 when they played in Buffalo, and they went on to triumph in the Cup in 2009. Most recently, the Chicago Blackhawks won the Winter Classic in 2009, and they won the cup just a few weeks ago. If this fact is true, the Winter Classic could be more than just a game; it could determine the future for either team.

This season will have a brand new look on the outside, but the hearts of the fans and players will still be the same on the inside. Good luck to the Penguins in this coming season, and I am sure that the Consol Energy Center will bring a lot of memories to the city of Pittsburgh starting on October 7th and will continue for many more years to come.

Sky Rocket Coaster Opens at Kennywood Today

Who doesn't love Kennywood? If you grew up in Pittsburgh, you grew up with Kennywood. School picnics, family reunions, nationality days and other events brings us to Kennywood every year - it's a Pittsburgh tradition! Even Hollywood has used Kennywood in their films, the latest being Adventureland released in 2009, starring Ryan Reynolds and Kristen Stewart.

Today marks another milestone in Kennywood's 112-year history; the unveiling of a new roller coaster called 'Sky Rocket'. Sky Rocket shoots you out of the station at 50mph, and goes straight up and over, before dropping you at a 90-degree angle and propelling you into corkscrews, sharp turns, and more drops along the way. I personally cannot wait to get to Kennywood this summer to ride Sky Rocket, as I'm sure you all are doing the same!

Kennywood is open May through October, with plenty of opportunities to make multiple visits. Happy Summer everyone!!

First 'Jam on Walnut' of the Summer!

June 28, 2010
Source Credits -talent network, inc.

---

Ahhh, it's finally summer! After the winter us Pittsburghers' had, we deserve to be outside as much as possible! That's where Shadyside's Jam on Walnut comes into play. This past Saturday was the first Jam on Walnut, out of three, that will be held throughout the summer. Walnut Street is shut down for the ultimate urban block party. This great event is brought to you by Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Verizon Wireless, with proceeds going towards the charity.

This was my first Jam on Walnut, and after the event, I couldn't figure out why I hadn't attended one in the past. My friends and I had a great time! They had the stage set up in between Doc's Place and Shady Grove, right in the heart of Walnut Street in Shadyside.  Donora started out the evening, playing a great set to get everyone in the party mood. That was the first time I got to see them, and they delivered above expectations. I'm excited to check them out around the city more often! In between Donora and Bon Journey, the crowd kept growing and growing. By 9:30pm when Bon Journey started, there was not an empty space on the street. Bon Journey started with 'Don't Stop Believin', which was surprising but very well received. It electrified the crowd and it didn't stop until they played their last song! Everyone was dancing and singing in the street, which made it a great endless summer night (queue in Richard Marx and turn it up please!) And, if you got tired from standing, our friends at Massage Envy were on hand giving free massages which was a perfect concert break!

If you missed this first Jam on Walnut, no worries, because there will be two more you can get to. The next one is on Saturday, July 24th and then again on Saturday, August 21st. Show runs from 7pm-11pm. Happy Summer everyone!!

Movie Box Office Results. Tom Cruise's Movie Career 'Knight and Day' Compared to the Jerry Maguire Days.

Well, it seems that it is risky business to have Tom Cruise attached as the lead to a film. After tons of promotion, publicity and even taking his photo off of the movie poster of 'Knight and Day' it looks like an impossible mission for Cruise to become a box office mega-star again. - fdm, talent network news.

Weekend box office:
'Toy Story 3' wins, but what does poor 'Knight and Day' performance tell us about Tom Cruise?

Tom Cruise, not on-target in "Knight and Day." (20th Century Fox)

"Toy Story 3" easily stays at the top of the box office. Adam Sandler remains a draw, even in a movie with only nine percent positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. And a poor revenue reception is bad news for "Knight and Day," but is Tom Cruise really to blame? An attempt to answer that question -- along with analysis of other pressing weekend box office matters -- follows.

Is a New Breed of Poker Player Taking Over?

June 22, 2010
Posted By - Emma Venezie
Source Credits - "Attack of The Math Brats" by Dan Kadlec. Time. June 28, 2010
---

There's a new breed of player, deemed "math brats," changing the face of poker, and they are throwing old-school players off their game. Since the game was invented nearly 100 years ago, it's been evolving, and it is no surprise that the power of Internet is now making its mark on Texas hold 'em. Texas hold 'em is the most popular poker game there is with 87% of online play belonging to it, and poker website revenue reaching $4.9 billion in 2009. The World Series Main Event is also becoming more popular: from 839 players joining in 2003 to 8,773 in 2006.

Players such as Phil Hellmuth Jr., a record 11 time World Series of Poker Championship bracelet winner and 1989 winner of the World Series Main Event, who has banked more than $6 million in World Series event prizes, are suffering because of the new rules implanted by the "math brats." These new players are changing poker to a game focused entirely on math, spending endless amounts of time playing the game online, watching the game on TV, and studying theories about how the game is played. Texas hold 'em has evolved into a data-driven game in which players use probability theory, basing their bets on patterns instead of the cards in their hands. The growth in Internet play has altered table play dramatically, specifically when the Internet players reach the table. And now, old-school players are losing their winning streaks.

The new breed of players rely on online software that provides feedback on how others players respond to a raise. The odds are played in a much more unpredictable manner in this new game play, which means these "math brats" are now raising and re-raising much more often despite having a mediocre hand, learning that betting big out of the blue will work, but only if you play often enough. This logic makes no sense to old-school players, who cannot understand why one would risk everything on a average hand. The thing about playing online versus being an old-school player is that you can play in 30 tournaments a night as compared to 30 tournaments a year. The new breed of players are more willing to risk it; they just jump to another game and try again.

So should old-school players adapt to the newly evolved game? Maybe, according to Hellmuth, who is attempting to turn his game around with help from a much younger two-time champion and even a "mind-set coach." It's hard to ignore the fact that it's the new breed of players that are now wearing the winner's bracelets. But could they possibly be easier to read than the old-school players? Could their unpredictability actually become quite predictable? And will the old-school players be completely pushed out of the tables? I guess only time will tell to see if these new rules stick...

Father's Day with The Flashlight Drags

June 22, 2010
Posted By - Emma Venezie
Source Credits - http://flashlightdrags.com/
---

The latest Flashlight Drags event, held on Father's Day (June 20) at the Waynesburg Airport in Greene County, was the first I've ever attended, but I'm positive it won't be my last. Though I'm not exactly a "car person," the overall atmosphere of the event was interesting, welcoming, and entertaining. It doesn't hurt that my dad, Herschel, is the voice behind the Flashlight Drags. Seeing him in his element and listening to his commentary was one of the major selling points of the day for me.

There were more than 2,000 spectators enjoying and understanding a lot more about the cars and racing than I was, but I can tell you that the Flashlight Drags works a little something like this: you race in pairs on a straight-a-way. You can either ask someone to race or wait to be paired up at the starting line. There is no timing; only the winner is counted. With more than 200 racers participating, there was a great mix of cars and motorcycles, and I was almost always surprised at who won the races. Interestingly, there was almost always a clear-cut winner; one of the racers usually killed the competition. And if there was a motorcycle involved, there was no competition at all. They were the fastest ones out there.

The majority of the day is just for fun, but eliminations do come at a certain point. And there are four awards handed out at the end of the day.

The big winners of the Father's Day event were:
Big Dawg Winner: Scott Matson from Butler, PA in his '68 OCDS 442 with 555 ci (Scott is a three time winner in the Big Dawg category).
Street Contender Winner (which means it is a street legal car that is driven in): Mike Conforti from Allison Park, PA in his '83 Camaro Z28 410 SB Nitros Automatic Transmisson
Tuner Winner: Dave Alviso from South Side, PA in his '06 Mitsubishi EVO MR

If you're even a slight fan of cars, the Flashlight Drags is something you have to experience. Waynesburg's next Flashlight Drags will be held on July 11th. Go to http://flashlightdrags.com/ for more information.

I also want to mention a really great cause I found out at the event: Money is being raised ($20 donations) to benefit Waynesburg Police Officer Brian Tennant who is currently fighting a brain tumor. They are trying to raise money to send him to China. They are holding a drawing for a Harley, specifically a 2010 FLSTF FATBOY, Scarlet Red with a Chrome Wheel Option. The drawing will be held on Tuesday August 31, 2010 at 7:00 p.m.; it will be treated as a PA Big Four Drawing. For more information contact 724-627-8113.

Jay Leno's Ratings Continue to Drop. Lower than Conan's

June 22, 2010

Jay Leno has lower ratings than Conan did

jay_leno-conan_obrien

When NBC fired Conan O’Brien, they said his numbers sucked and Letterman was beating him and they were losing money. So they replaced him with Jay Leno. The bad news is that Leno gets even lower numbers than Conan did. The badder news is that Lenos comeback numbers have dropped and now he doesn’t beat Letterman either. So if NBC’s plan was to piss away 200 million dollars on a complete clusterfuck, mission accomplished!
For the first week since Jay Leno’s Tonight Show return, he was tied by David Letterman’s Late Show, as both shows averaged a 0.9 adults 18-49 rating for the week of June 7-11. Coming off a week of repeats for both shows, Leno fell a tenth of a point and Letterman gained two tenths.

The prices are way below what you would pay if you just purchased a one-time ad.  And some of the smaller ads are not normally offered, so this is a rare chance to advertise at really low rates.  Please consider placing an ad for your business or seeing if someone you know might like to advertise.  The 50 Finest issue is an extra special issue that gets a lot of attention and is saved for years to come, so the advertising benefits are really good.

Most Pittsburghers are very proud as to how far our city has come from our steel mill days. The great people over at Pittsburgh Green Story have put together a website to document the environmental transformation that our city has gone through. Take a look and pass along the link!

On this beautiful Saturday, take a kayak trip around the point, sit outside along the riverfront for lunch, take a walking tour around downtown, a Just Ducky tour, shop in the market in the Strip District, hop on a Segway tour, or anything else you can think of to admire our great city!

Alcohol As Art On Your Wall

Have you ever wondered what your favorite cocktails looked like under a microscope? No? Yeah, me either! UNTIL I stumbled upon BevShots. BevShots was established back in 1992 when research scientist Michael Davidson was looking for novel ways to fund his Florida State University lab.

According to BevShots.com, BevShot images are made by first crystallizing the drink of choice on a lab slide. Using a standard light microscope with a camera attached, the light source is polarized and passed through the crystal. This creates the magnificent colors we see in our favorite drinks featured on this site. VOILA!! Now your favorite drink is abstract art for your wall!

The prints start at a very affordable $19.99 and up, and you can pick by color, type of drink, or browse the full gallery.

I hope you have as much fun exploring this website as much as I have, and I'm can't wait to splash some bare walls with this great, creative art!

How is Ozzy Osbourne Still Alive?

---

One hundred years ago, we would have never known why. But now, with advanced medicine and research, Ozzy Osbourne is going to find out how a lifetime of drug and substance abuse has affected his body. He will be one of only a few people in the world to have his full genome sequenced.

I studied the Human Genome Project as a senior in high school, and it was fascinating to me that with a little bit of analyzing, I could learn which parent I got certain attributes from. We also studied DNA strands and learned how to differentiate a healthy DNA strand from a mutated one. Ah modern science, gotta love it!

The London Sunday Times also mentions "Before he reformed, Osbourne survived decades of substance abuse and bit the head off a bat while intoxicated on stage — he had to have rabies jabs afterwards. He has a genetic disorder similar to Parkinson’s disease, was committed to a mental institution and broke his neck in a quad bike accident after which he was placed in a chemically induced coma."

This test will tell Ozzy how to prevent any diseases and possibly clue researchers in on how drugs are absorbed into the body. Maybe Ozzy was drinking coconut water LONG before any of us knew about the benefits! Coincidence? I'll let you decide.
