Jersey Shore' to return for 2nd season

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) -- MTV's "Jersey Shore" will be back for a second season. The network's president of programming Tony DiSanto said Friday that 12 new episodes will air this summer.

According to the network, Pauly D, Mike, Snooki, Jenni, Sammi, Ronnie and Vinny escape the cold northeast and find themselves in a new destination.

The show about tanned twenty-somethings hasn't been without controversy. In December, the New Jersey Italian American Legislative Caucus called for MTV to cancel the show, saying it promotes derogatory ethnic stereotypes and is "wildly offensive."

MTV isn't revealing how much the cast members are being paid to do the show.

UPDATE: TMZ has learned Vinny accepted MTV's $10,000 per episode offer. We're told one of the terms the lawyers are hammering out is the number of appearances the cast can make outside the show. Lemieux, Penguins co-owner offer to buy Pirates

Pirates downplay recent meeting; Nutting repeats: 'Team not for sale'

Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle, co-owners of the Penguins, recently made an unsolicited offer to buy the Pirates in a face-to-face meeting with that team's owner, Bob Nutting, but the offer did not receive a response.

Sources on the Penguins' side last night described the offer made by Mr. Lemieux and Mr. Burkle as "very serious," without divulging a dollar figure, and said they remain interested in following up.

The Pirates characterized the matter far differently.

Mr. Nutting, the only person in the meeting to comment on it, was adamant that no serious discussion about a sale had taken place. And he firmly reiterated that the Pirates are not for sale.

"Honestly, I'm not sure there's a situation to describe," Mr. Nutting said last night when asked about the meeting. "I like Ron. He's an extremely competent businessman and deal-maker, and we've talked about a wide range of topics. But I think the simplest way to say this is that there never has been a substantive or formal offer for the team. The team is not for sale."

Another great music venue in the Pittsburgh area will be turning the amp to zero and closing the doors next month. Ending with a great show by the Pittsburgh all-stars, owner Daryl Price speaks on the closing.

Friends,

All good things must end, and the end for a dream that started 9 years ago will hold its last party February 27. The Rhythm House will be tore down and a Get Go will stand in it's place. Don't be sad embrace this last month spread the word and celebrate an era with me as we close with the last big party on Saturday February 27 with Donnie Iris, Joe Grushecky, B.E. Taylor, Scott Blasey, Bill Deasy and Velveeta.

The nightlife landscape will have a drastic void, leaving behind only the great memories. The first dates, the first kisses, the engagements, the bachelor parties, the weddings, a couple of Super Bowls and a Stanley Cup, great live music and the friends we have met along the way.

I am proud of what we have done here and we will be going out in style, things have been very busy here for the last few months and I expect it to be crazy busy as we come to silence the music.

It has been an honor to be your host for the last nine years and proud to say we put on some of the greatest parties any where in the world.

I have to thank the support of Froggy Radio, WDUQ and WDVE for making us a landmark. I could never thank Frank Bell, Jimmy Krenn, Sean McDowell and Tony Mowod enough.

The great shows of Darius Rucker, Billy Currington, Josh Turner, Jason Michael Carroll, Blake Shelton,Quiet Riot, Warrant, Rod Piazza, the late night parties, the quiet nights with friends, celebrity appearances Lou Gossett Jr. Jason Gedrick and Matthew McConaughey. The many sports legends to tip one back here. The Nashville Star Auditions, The DVE Morning show,and Jenna from Survivor hanging in the office because no one could know she won. Countless memories that we all will take with us.

I hope you all agree that there is no other place in the world like the Rhythm House Cafe. I hope to see you here before we go. I will keep everyone posted of the special events we have planned for February.

Pittsburgh Native Steve Braband is Alive Again at ESPN

Steve Braband, known as the kid who invaded your television set for two and a half weeks to remind you SportsCenter was going to be LIVE in the mornings is in front of the camera one again. Steve can now be seen in a video segment on the ESPN SportsCenter blog. The 4-Letter sent Steve to New York during last NFC Championship game last Sunday. A pretty interesting piece as Steve is sent to a sports bar that is the home sports bar for displaced Vikings and Saints fans. Yes, that is right, the same bar is a Vikings bar and a Saints bar. See what happens when two teams playing for the Superbowl come together in the same bar. (Video Link Below)

Steve Braband is a Graduate of Clarion University of Pennsylvania and grew up in Cranberry TWP, PA. Groundhog Day. Punxsutawney Phil May Become a Robot.

Will Punxsutawney Phil Be Next To Lose His Job To A Machine?

Well, folks, it’s almost Groundhog Day again, and you know what that means. No, the post office doesn’t get yet another screwball holiday off to screw up your Netflix queue–it means that once again, Punxsutawney Phil will emerge from his hole, look for his shadow, and give us yet another nigh-meaningless prediction of how much longer winter will go on.

And not surprisingly, animal rights groups are protesting, saying waking Phil up and taking pictures of him is cruel, and he should be replaced with a robot.

Now, leave aside the obvious fact that putting a gadget in place of an icon like Punxsutawney Phil is downright sacrilege, from an operational standpoint, how could it possibly work? Is there some kind of light sensor that tells the Phil robot to hide from its shadow? Does it test barometric pressure to provide an estimate on weather conditions?

Or does it just pop up and do something at random, and everyone else interprets, kind of like the ACTUAL groundhog does now?

Not sure how this works, and frankly, I agree with Bill Deeley of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club who said this about replacing Phil:

“I mean, come on, this is just crazy.”

Carrie Underwood to sing national anthem at the Super Bowl

MIAMI (Reuters) - American country singer Carrie Underwood will sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl, the NFL announced on Thursday.

Underwood, winner of the American Idol show in 2005, has amassed more than 11 million in U.S. album sales and is a four-time Grammy Award winner.

Musician and actress Queen Latifah will sing "America the Beautiful" as part of the pregame festivities. "The Who" will perform during Halftime.

Where is the next generation of Pittsburgh characters?

Vic Cianca, the white-gloved traffic cop who died Sunday, was a Pittsburgh kind of guy. So were Fred Honsberger and Fred Rogers and Myron Cope.

Former Mayor Sophie Masloff continues to embody a kind of affectionate yinzer spirit. The list goes on: Bruno Sammartino, Ricki Wertz, Lynn Cullen, Bob Prince, Chilly Billy Cardille, Joe Hardy, Joe DeNardo, Dan Rooney, Michelle Madoff, Cyril Wecht, Paul Shannon ...

Love them or hate them, they belong to us. Iconic personalities all, they help shape how we share the view of ourselves as Pittsburghers.

But here's the odd part: in trying to compare the next wave of iconic personalities in this city, it's apparent there will be no next wave, at least not until everyone is on the same, digital page.

Just being famous or successful doesn't count. Same with being beloved (sorry, Sidney Crosby) or greatly admired (ditto, Thomas Starzl).

Teen from Plum wins record contract in Miley Cyrus contest

Amy Colalella, a 16-year-old from Plum, has won the Miley Cyrus "Be A Star" competition and the grand prize of a record contract.

Amy entered the contest last fall, along with 5,000 others, by submitting a video clip singing Demi Lovato's "Two Worlds Collide." She continued to move up through the rounds performing songs by Cyrus, the Beatles and Michael Jackson.

Jay Leno Still Hasn't Called Conan Over 'Tonight Show' Mess (VIDEO)
Jay Leno sat down with Oprah Wednesday in an interview to air Thursday, and revealed that he still hasn't spoken to Conan O'Brien after reclaiming the "Tonight Show."

"Haven't talked to him since all this, no," Leno told Oprah, adding that he wanted to call but "it didn't seem appropriate.

"I think, let things cool down and maybe we'll talk," he said.

Leno said that he wasn't hurt by what Conan said about him.

"They were jokes. And that's okay," he said. "It's what we do. It's like being a fighter and say when you got punched in the head, did it hurt? Well, yeah. But you're a fighter. That's what you do."

Is Jay Leno Permanently Damaged By 'Tonight Show' Battle?
During his Winfrey appearance, Leno said he was devastated when NBC executives asked him to leave the "Tonight" show because they wanted to give the show to O'Brien. He said he told "a white lie on the air" when he said he was going to retire because he assumed he would find another job in show business.

Leno said he "felt really bad" for O'Brien.

Except for the Winfrey interview, Leno will do little talking after his 10 p.m. EST show ends Tuesday, Feb. 9, making way for coverage of the Winter Olympics. NBC will promote his return to late night but in a low-key fashion since it's been only a few months that it hyped his prime time show.

"Most people, at the end of the day, they want to laugh," said Barnhart, founder of the TV Barn Web site and a late-night expert, "and nobody delivers (laughs) at a higher volume than Jay Leno does. He's not Michelangelo out there. He's more like Jerry Bruckheimer, shooting off the hits and following a close formula. He's very good at what he does."

While Leno, who turns 60 in April, draws a larger audience than O'Brien, his audience is also older – and that's not considered a good thing in television. Barnhart wonders whether, in five more years, NBC might regret essentially choosing Leno over O'Brien.

The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien came to a close Friday night. The episode was a huge ratings success. Even bigger ratings than his premier episode. The show was funny and heartfelt. A first class finale.

For those folks who have grown up with and love late night television like I do please view the video below. I think it is 7 fantastic minutes capturing the great work and highlighting the talent and passion that Conan O'Brien brings to his work. I laughed and I was moved and the highlight package of funny bits seem funnier than Jay Leno has ever done on TV and COCO did it in seven months. I am looking forward to Conan's return in the fall.-fm

OMG & Wow: An Article Back in 2008 Quoted a Latenight Source as Saying the Plan is to Keep Leno at NBC 'so if Conan fails on ‘The Tonight Show’ they will put Jay right back in there' James Hibberd's Live Feed at THR

We've always known that James Hibberd, our former TVWeek colleague, is one of the best reporters around, but the following reportage astounds even us!

Back in December, 2008, after Hibberd left us for The Hollywood Reporter, he wrote a piece quoting a "well placed late-night source" who explained that Leno was being kept at NBC in case Conan didn't pull numbers and the network could then replace O'Brien with Leno.

In a piece published on Dec. 9, 2008--on the occasion of NBC announcing Leno's move to 10 p.m.--Hibberd said he had spoken to the source in June, 2008, who had told Hibberd this:

"They [NBC] will try to keep Jay in the fold so if Conan fails on ‘The Tonight Show’ they will put Jay right back in there. Jeff Zucker will call Jay into his office with big wink and say, 'if you say it publicly I’ll deny it, but if Conan fails, I want you back.' That’s just the way NBC works. Back when Dave and Jay were fighting over 'The Tonight Show,’ they tried to see if they could do the same thing. Conan O'Brien -- Free at Last

NBC has finally announced what TMZ has been reporting for days -- Conan O'Brien will be a free man on September 1.

NBC released a statement moments ago, officially announcing Conan's last appearance on "The Tonight Show" will be tomorrow.

NBC noted that the deal -- struck today (as we first told you) -- will free Conan to "pursue other opportunities after September 1, 2010."



Conan O'Brien, NBC Reach $45Mil Settlement
Conan O'Brien and NBC worked out their final conflict hours ago and have reached a $45 million settlement ... and we've learned it's a sweeter deal for Conan than anyone thought.

Network sources tell TMZ the "mitigation" clause was taken off the table. Translation -- Conan will get a severance of $32.5 million, regardless of whether he gets another hosting gig. Not bad for seven months work.

As we first reported, NBC will pay $7.5 million to Conan's "Tonight Show" staff -- and our sources believe the network added several thousand more to the pot at the last minute.

In addition, NBC will pay a whopping $4.5 million to the executive producer.

Conan has agreed he will not take another hosting gig 'till September at the earliest.

Conan's last show is Friday. We're told NBC hasn't decided who will replace Conan for the period between Monday and the Winter Olympics.

Weigh-Ins, Pre-Fight Party At Rivers Casino's Wheelhouse Sports Bar

PITTSBURGH -- Local light-heavyweight Rayco "War" Saunders will face Patrick Perez in the main event of a night of boxing at the Pittsburgh Hilton ballroom on Friday night.

Former world champion Roy Jones Jr. is the promoter of the event, which is being dubbed Three Rivers Warbash.

Also on the card is undefeated Pittsburgh welterweight Jessie “The Future” Lubash (14-0, eight KOs) vs. "Magnificent" Martinus Clay.

Public weigh-ins will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Wheelhouse sports bar at Rivers Casino on the North Shore. Jones will sign autographs and WDVE will do a live broadcast.

There will also be a pre-fight party at the Wheelhouse from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on fight night. Boxing ticketholders get a voucher for $10 in free slots play. Shuttles will be available to and from the downtown Hilton for the fights.

Sports Talk Radio Slated To Take Over 93.7, B94 To Go Silent.

PITTSBURGH -- Say goodbye to popular Pittsburgh radio station B94 and say hello to SportsRadio 93.7 The Fan.

CBS Radio said the change will occur on Feb. 15 at 5:30 a.m. The company said B94-style music will then be featured on Star 100.7.

“SportsRadio 93.7 The Fan is being built for Pittsburgh’s sports fans who are simply the best in the country. We’ll feature an array of opinionated, compelling and very talented local talk-show personalities who will be highly engaged in discussions and commentary driven by our listeners," said Michael Young, Senior Vice President and Market Manager of CBS RADIO Pittsburgh.

The station’s lineup and complete roster of talent will be announced prior to the launch of the station.

So what happens to B94's Bubba? CBS officials said he'll move to the same time-period on Star, along with current hosts J.R. Randall and Shelley Duffy. B94’s Melanie Taylor will host middays on Star Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

A great Golden Globes broadcast last night. Good Hosting job by Brit Ricky Gervais. He kept it tight and the show clocked in 8 seconds under time. A nice variety of winners and not an overbearing dominance by one show, movie or actor. The men and women all looked great and classy, nothing too outrageous and slutty. The question of the day is 'what the hell happened to Cher?' She looked like a 7-foot wax Gene Simmons next to Christina Aguilera who herself for once did not look like a ghetto slut. Personal favorites of best looking dazzling ladies. Jennifer Aniston, Halle Berry, Toni Collette, Zoe Saldana, Reese Witherspoon, Kate Hudson, Emily Blunt and Penelope Cruz. Oh and of course George Clooney, ha-ha.

Conan O'Brien done with 'Tonight Show'; Jay Leno to take over

Late-night funnyman Conan O'Brien's last night as host of "The Tonight Show" will likely be next Friday, allowing Jay Leno to reclaim his old time slot.

"Conan does not currently plan on doing any more new shows after next week,” a source told People magazine's Web site this afternoon.

TMZ.com reported today that Leno struck a deal with NBC to reclaim the 11:35 p.m. to 12:35 a.m. "Tonight Show" slot.

If Jan. 22 is O'Brien's final live broadcast, the show will have ended two weeks before NBC’s scheduled preemption for its 2010 Winter Olympics coverage.

O'Brien's departure means that Leno will return to "The Tonight Show" desk at 11:35 p.m. in a deal the long-time host finalized today with the Peacock network, TMZ.com reported.

O’Brien Refuses to Follow Leno, Celebrities Join Team Jay or Team Conan

In a statement today addressed to “People of Earth” Conan O’Brien announced today that he wouldn’t host “The Tonight Show” in a slot following Jay Leno. His words are already reverberating in one Earth City in particular: Hollywood.

NBC had proposed moving “The Tonight Show” from 11:35 p.m. to 12:05 a.m., and putting “The Jay Leno Show” in the 11:35 p.m. slot. In his statement, O’Brien said that he’s proud of the legacy of his show and “I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction.” He added that “I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next.”

'Avatar' leads box office for fourth weekend

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Avatar" ruled the North American box office for a fourth weekend on Sunday, days after it soared up the worldwide rankings to become the second-biggest movie of all time.

James Cameron's 3-D sci-fi epic earned $48.5 million across the United States and Canada during the three-day period beginning Friday.

Its total rose to $429.0 million, making it the seventh-biggest movie of all time in North America, before accounting for inflation. The last movie to enjoy four consecutive weekends at No. 1 was the Batman movie, "The Dark Knight," in 2008.

Fox, a unit of News Corp, has said it expects "Avatar" to challenge "The Dark Knight" ($533 million) for the No. 2 slot in the North American record books. Cameron's "Titanic" holds the title with $601 million.

NBC Shakeup -- Jay Leno Comes Out on Top

Jay Leno is going back to his 11:30 PM time slot, and it's looking like Conan O'Brien is the odd man out ... sources tell TMZ.



TMZ has learned Jay's 10:00 PM show will go on hiatus February 1. After the Olympics, Jay will take back his 11:30 PM time slot. What has not been decided -- whether Jay's show will be a half hour, followed by Conan, or whether Jay's show will be an hour and NBC says sayonara to Mr. O'Brien.

TMZ is told Jay and Conan have both been told of the changes. As for Jay, interestingly, he'll get what he always wanted -- his 11:30 PM time slot.
