Hometown Guy Helping Haitian Teen With Cancer

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―Years since former "Survivor" contestant and hometown hero Ian Rosenberger became famous for giving up a million dollars on the show, his rare generosity has him back in the news again.

This time, it is for a cause close to his heart and comes after a trip to the earthquake-ravaged slums of Haiti.

"I was riding in a back of a truck taking pictures and there's another kid in the truck with me and I noticed he had this facial deformity. I didn't know what it was," said Rosenberger. "Finally, I got the chance to meet him and just fell in love with the kid."

That love for 19-year-old Tassy has turned into a mission to save a young man's life.

"He has the type of cancer that if the tumor grows large enough it actually pushes his teeth out of the way so he can't eat, pushes on his trachea so he can't breath and pushes on his brain and eventually will kill him just from the pain," said Rosenberger.

The surgery Tassy needs costs about $550,000.

Rosenberger looked for help from doctors from Cincinnati to as far as South Africa and India, but it was doctors here in Pittsburgh at Allegheny General Hospital that came to the rescue.

'''We can do it for $30,000,' and I said you gotta be kidding me. This is it!" said Rosenberger.

Now, Rosenberger is raising the money and putting on an event at The Priory on Pittsburgh's North Side on Aug. 26.

"We're gonna sell prints that we've taken from Haiti, some local and regional entertainment. Some really cool names that people will know, but we can't announce yet," said Rosenberger. "There's been dozens of people in Pittsburgh who have offered sports memorabilia and baskets and the zoo is involved. The Penguins have donated some memorabilia. So, one night, one cause, one life."
