The July 23 issue of Entertainment Weekly examines the downward spiral of the summer concert business as of late: "down 17 percent from last year, according to concert trade mag Pollstar." Pittsburgh native Christina Aguilera completely canceled her tour; acts such as Rhianna and Jonas Brothers are canceling dates; Limp Bizkit postponed their tour; Lilith Fair canceled ten shows and a number of acts have dropped out; the American Idol tour has canceled eight cities. So what is the problem? The price of the ticket. Yet no one seems ready to lower ticket prices anytime soon: "Promoters say they can't lower prices because talent guarantees are too steep, while managers blame ticket surcharges." Greediness is taking a big hit on the concert industry. At this point, both the fans and the artists are losing out, aren't they? True, festivals like Bonnaroo are doing well, and, not surprisingly, Lady Gaga is selling out arenas, but if things continue in this direction for the majority of other artists, how can ticket prices stay the same?
