1. The August Wilson Center for African American Culture Welcome and Tribute Ceremony

Close to 800 guests arrived in two waves for the opening of the sleek new center Downtown, marking an occasion that was as happy as it was historic. Constanza Romero Wilson, the playwright's widow, spoke on behalf of the family and served as honorary chair with Milt and Nancy Washington. From soul food to the Harlem Quartet, the evening was a celebration of African-American culture.

2. The Mattress Factory's 2009 Urban Garden Party

Imagine arriving at a party where the Rolling Stones are playing live. Better yet, imagine what it's like to be a Rolling Stone. Chairs Cindy and Rich Engler planned a bash based on their years of experience in the world of rock 'n' roll, giving more than 1,100 guests an All Access pass to party. This annual event is famous for being as colorful and enlightened as the installation art museum it supports.

3. Creating a Scene: The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust 25th Anniversary Gala.

Guests were treated to a peek at "rehearsals" as they enjoyed drinks behind the curtain, then took their seats in the Benedum for an original musical production headlined by Broadway star Kelli O'Hara. The evening honored many of the founders and benefactors who have shaped the Cultural District as it raised $610,000.

'Avatar' And 'Sherlock' Crush Box Office, Break Weekend Record

NEW YORK — It was a memorable and merry Christmas in Hollywood as moviegoers shattered box-office records, responding in droves to a diverse array of high-profile releases over the holiday weekend.

The estimated $278 million in weekend box-office revenue broke the previous record of roughly $253 million set in July 2008, the weekend "The Dark Knight" was released.

"Avatar," the 3-D epic, topped them all, earning $75 million for 20th Century Fox, according to studio estimates Sunday. Remarkably, that was only a 3 percent drop from its opening weekend total of $77.4 million. (Blockbusters typically drop 30-50 percent in the second weekend.) In its 10 days of release, "Avatar" has made $212 million domestically – and could be on its way to a worldwide gross of over $1 billion.

In second was "Sherlock Holmes," Guy Ritchie's reboot of the franchise with Robert Downey Jr. starring as Arthur Conan Doyle's detective. The Warner Bros. film opened with a weekend total of $65.4 million, including a record Christmas Day debut of $24.9 million.

Facebook Joins the 2009 Web Trend Party

Facebook's released a very detailed analysis of the trends in status updates for 2009, and it's fascinating stuff. For example, did you know Facebookers are depressed on Mondays, and mourned Patrick Swayze about as much as Michael Jackson?

Facebook's Data Team put the list together, and it's a little more sophisticated than other trend lists you've probably seen. Facebook's calling it Memology--a map of the emerging memes of the year. The data was pulled from U.S. users status updates for the whole year, with an algorithm trawling for phrases of between one and four words, looking for bursts of interest in new phrases an comparing the data with 2008's results. The top ten memes are shown in the table above.

Straight off the bat there's an ironic surprise sitting at number ten: Twitter. Facebook and Twitter are busily engaged in a pitched battle to be the one true measure of what the World is talking about in real time, so it's fab to see Facebookers talking about Twitter so much. Talking about this, Facebook can't resist slipping in a subtle dig: "April showed a peak of activity and momentum, though mentions of the word "Twitter" decreased over the past few months."

James Cameron's "Avatar" opened with the largest worldwide box office take by from a non-sequel by earning $232.2 million this past weekend. It only earned $73 million in the U.S., but its worldwide take didn't include China or Japan either. Many snow storms in the eastern part of the United States held back many box office goers this past weekend as Avatar expected a bigger domestic opening number.

This particular episode boasted the largest audience for a single telecast for the network in more than 10 years and was the most-watched Dexter episode ever at a +71% increase over the season three finale. Additionally, the third season conclusion of Californication at 10p drew in 1.055 million total viewers and was the most-watched episode in this series' to date. Californication's total viewership was +72% higher than the third season ender.

• E!'s Keeping Up with the Kardashians season four premiere Sunday night at 10p posted a 2.82 rating among A18-49 and a 3.90 rating with A18-34. These ratings results are more than double those of the third season's debut episode.

• CBS Television Distribution reupped the medical talk show The Doctors for two more years through the 2011-2012 season. Produced by Stage 29 Productions, The Doctors is currently in its second season and the show received renewals in 48 of the top 50 markets.

Craig Wolfley is a 12-year veteran of the NFL who played 10 years with the Pittsburgh Steelers and 2 years with the Minnesota Vikings. Craig was recently selected as a member of the Steeler's All-Century Team (voted by Pittsburgh fans as a “team” of the best players to ever wear a Steeler uniform) and chosen to be part of the Syracuse University 20th Century All-Star Team. Wolfley successfully competed in the World's Strongest Man and the NFL Strongest Man competitions, and placed 2nd in the first professional Sumo contest held on the North American continent. He holds a black belt in Freestyle Jiu Jitsu and has over 19 years of martial arts training - including being one of the original founders of the Power Punch program, taught to professional and amateur football players and teams throughout the United States.

Craig's speech includes light, humorous, and often inspiring tales about his 12 years as a player in the NFL and his life after football. Casting Call: MTV is seeking a newlywed couple to appear on an upcoming episode of the network's award-winning docu-series True Life. The ideal couple should live in the Northeast and appear to be between the ages of 18-28 and have just gotten married or are about to tie the knot. The documentary will follow young couples through their wedding and immediately after as they adjust to their new life together. Interested couples or if you know of one, should send an email to newlywed@mtvn.com along with names, contact info in addition to relating what your expectations of newlywed life are/were. MTV is producing the show in-house and this episode is tentatively slated to air next spring.

Named One-Hit Wonder of the Decade for "Bad Day"

NEW YORK — As far as one-hit wonders go, Daniel Powter is king of them all – for this decade, at least.

Powter, whose hit "Bad Day" reigned on top of the Billboard pop charts for five weeks in 2006, was named as the decade's top one-hit wonder by Billboard.

The magazine describes one-hit wonders as acts whose second hit did not reach the top 25; they only included acts from 2000 to 2007, since someone from last year might just be taking a break.

No. 2 on their list is the Terror Squad for "Lean Back"; No. 3 is Crazy Town with "Butterfly"; No. 4 is MIMS with "This Is Why I'm Hot"; and No. 5 is D4L – remember them? – with "Laffy Taffy."

Rally Around the Troops

If this country has one true national treasure, it's the brave men and women who risk their lives on behalf of America. Our troops keep us safe and defend our freedom, and Steel City Auctions(SCA) is happy to announce a program that will give something back to them for this holiday season.

1250 ESPN in Pittsburgh has teamed up with Operation Troop Appreciation this holiday season to collect items for members of the PA National Guard who will be deployed to Afghanistan in early January. 238 members of the PA National Guard will leave for the middle east on January 3rd for 18 months. The next donation date is December 5 at the Southside Works, from 10 AM - 1 PM, and you can find a list of items to donate here.
