Local Comic a hit in Steelers Bar in Rome, Italy
From talent network, inc.
By David Sedelmeier

The Vatican, Sistine Chapel and Coliseum are the sights to see when traveling Italy. But when you’re from Pittsburgh one of the must see sights is La Botticella Bar in Rome. La Botticella is Rome’s official Pittsburgh Steelers Bar. Ms Loretta Yasher and her two granddaughters were in Rome last month. They are all big football fans so they decided to pay homage to the Steelers bar. While there the bar owner –Giovanni insisted they listen to this song he found on Internet about Pittsburgh called “DahnTahn” a song by Comic/Musician Mark Eddie. Loretta & her granddaughters started laughing and told bar owner – “you’re not going to believe this” but Mark Eddie is her son in law... bar owner was speechless. Small world and smaller if you from Pittsburgh...

Steelers faithful find a shrine of their own in Rome
Pittsburgh tourists have made La Botticella their cantina of choice
From The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
By Dan Gigler

ROME, Italy -- They come here, like so many do, as pilgrims and as scholars.

Their travel slate may include a papal Mass at St. Peter's Basilica, or a study of the ruins of classical antiquity. But as itinerant subjects of the Steelers Nation, they also flock to La Botticella, a cozy pub just off of the Piazza Navona, which in recent years -- mostly by happenstance -- has become the cantina of choice for Steelers fans in the Eternal City.

The reigning Emperor of the Roman Steeler Republic, Giovanni Poggi, is the owner and proprietor. Travelers from around the globe have stopped to leave an official "Asciugamano Terribile" as tribute.

"I must have 30 Terrible Towels," Mr. Poggi said, laughing and pointing to close to a dozen bags stuffed with, among other things, Terrible Towels, Steelers T-shirts, signs, magnets, hats -- even a pair of slippers and a long-haired Troy Polamalu wig.

Housed in a century-old former wine merchant's shop in a narrow cobblestone alley, La Botticella was opened 18 years ago by Mr. Poggi to capitalize on hordes of tourists looking to quench their thirsts with a cocktail between sightseeing stops.

Along the way, the haunt developed a loyal clientele, first among U.S.-based flight crews stopping over in Rome and later college students studying abroad. About four to five years ago, Mr. Poggi said groups of Penn State and Duquesne University students spending semesters in Rome -- most of them from Pittsburgh -- adopted La Botticella as their hangout.

The advent of satellite TV made it easy to catch American sports, and homesick students wanted to see their beloved Steelers and Penguins play. A match was made, and La Botticella became a regular Sunday gathering spot to see the Black & Gold.

"The fans that came in here, their passion for the Steelers was infectious," Mr. Poggi said. "They go as nuts for them as the [soccer] fans here do for Roma or Lazio," he said, alluding to Rome's stalwart futbol franchises.
He tacked a small Steelers pennant onto La Botticella's sidewalk sandwich board to beckon to Pittsburghers and Steelers fans who passed by. Soon after, Pittsburgh paraphernalia -- Terrible Towels, Sidney Crosby and Troy Polamalu jerseys, even a sticker from Fat Head's Saloon on the South Side -- were affixed behind its bar.

A "You're in Steelers Country" banner now hangs on the back wall, and Mr. Poggi once unfurled it out at the Coliseum prior to Super Bowl XLIII. Conspicuously absent however: any "Franco's Italian Army" bric-a-brac.

Fans take 'Steelers Nation' battle cry literally.
From The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Producers: Marilyn Caldrone, Melissa Tkach

Part of the mystique of the Steelers is that the fan base openly unfurls its towels and battle flags in stadiums across the country. They were out in force in Kansas at Arrowhead Stadium for Sunday's Steelers-Chiefs game.

Providing vehicular transport to the inebriated is pretty far down on the list of preferred career choices.

But that's not to say a trio of 28 year-old South Hills residents doesn't enjoy making a few bucks doing it part-time.

They launched the Pear Transportation Company last month in hopes of making it Pittsburgh's premier designated driving service. Being that it appears to be the city's only designated driving service, their chances of success appear good.

"It's gone well so far," said company co-owner Tony Ciotti of Green Tree. "Aside from losing a few hours of sleep every night, it's been a lot of fun."

Beyonce, Lady GaGa, 50 Cent New Music Videos Drop This Week. (Videos)

New music and videos making news this week are Beyonce & Lady GaGa with "Video Phone", Lady GaGa with "Bad Romance" and 50 Cent drops a his new album today titled 'Before I Self Destruct' and the lead single "Baby By Me" featuring the soft and silky Ne-Yo.

Personal thoughts are as follows. Beyonce's 'Video Phone' with Lady GaGa is all about the video with those two being chic, hot and odd. The song is marginal and not what it should be for the power of those two. The Hook, Beat and Rhythm do not give me a handle to grasp.

GaGa's 'Bad Romance' is a pretty racy video and well done. The song is standard GaGa formula and is catchy but not a mega-hit. It is good but too long clocking in at 5 minutes. Radio loves 3:30 to 4:30 in length but she is on fire and all of her stuff blowing up so i am sure it will do just find and be a big hit but not like 'Poker Face'.

50 Cent just picked up the white courtesy phone and is apparently still alive. The first single should be a Ne-Yo song as it is mostly him singing the smooth R&B vibe with 50 adding his flow. It is not bad though. Typical fifty singing abut his penis and sex. Should be a moderate hit.

The videos these day will clog up and lag on you possibly so as always hit the play button then pause it for 20-30 seconds then hit play to let the videos buffer and to have a more enjoyable viewing experience.

Giant Eagle Market District Ace of Cakes Geof Manthorne talent network.
Who is Geof Manthorne?
As one of the stars of the Food Network’s hit reality show Ace of Cakes, Geof Manthorne is known for his incredible cake creations and dry, sardonic sense of humor. Viewers of the show have likened Geof's skewed viewpoint and quick wit to watching the show with a close friend. Most recently, he contributed to Ace of Cakes: Inside the World of Charm City Cakes as both an author and a consultant.

After beginning his employment at Charm City Cakes, Geof used the skills learned from his previous occupation as an architectural model builder to create his own style of cake decorating. Combining Geof’s dedication and attention to detail with Chef Duff Goldman’s know-how and vision, they have taken Charm City Cakes from a kitchen in a Baltimore row house to an internationally known bakery and mischief troupe. A diverse range of skills are present at their cake shop, permitting the belief that no cake idea is impossible to produce, be it a giant Hogwarts castle or a life-sized motorcycle. As Executive Sous Chef and a project lead, Geof mainly oversees replicas; with a meticulous eye has constructed cake models of Notre Dame cathedral, Taj Mahal, and "nearly every building sacred to Baltimoreans".

Geof grew up in southeastern Pennsylvania and moved to Baltimore in the early nineties. He spends his free time as a singer/songwriter and also plays trumpet in a Fela Kuti tribute band.

What's New in Pittsburgh?

The 13th of November, 2009

Pittsburgh's wildly popular "POPCity" has a nice story this week by staff writer "New Girl" Elaine Labalme. Check out the link at the end of this post to read another buzzing story by Pop City and Elaine that compares Pittsburgh and Cleveland.

New Girl in Town: What's New in Pittsburgh?

By Elaine Labalm

Far from heralding the winter of my discontent, this fall has ushered in a season of merriment thanks to a number of new openings in Pittsburgh. How can things be anything but bliss when I have finally found affordable, delectable Asian cuisine?

At Plum Pan Asian Kitchen in East Liberty, colorful Chinese lanterns are suspended from a way-up-there ceiling and a white hi-backed leather banquette hugs a swath of room and plays off chocolate brown everything. I imagine Nancy Sinatra and her go-go boots walking in the door at any moment. My tour of Asia starts with Tasmanian Salmon Tataki, a hunk of glistening salmon paired with burrata cheese and tomatoes. Best of all is the duck dipping sauce served alongside, a pinkish-orange goo that positively sparkles. I decide to order the Marilyn Mon Roll on my next visit and continue on to General Tso's chicken, which is utterly fresh and also sparkly (must be the lighting). A Malaysian yellow curry brings more freshness and is composed of countless chunky vegetables and the only thing missing is a bit more heat on everything I eat. Cool perfection comes in the way of Plum's ice cream sundaes, each more inventive than the next (yes, I do try all three).

Hire a Great Magician.

How to Hire a Great Magician.
Submitted by David Lawrence
Written by Wayne N. Kawamoto

When hiring a magician, you want an entertainer who is professional, will do a great job, offers a fun show, performs great magic and makes your event memorable. Unfortunately, there are lots of so called “entertainers” out there who call themselves magicians, but do little more than put on bad shows, waste your money and embarrass you, the host. So how can you separate the bad magicians from the great ones? Here’s how.

Unfortunately, there is no certification for magicians. Anyone who buys a few cheap tricks from the magic or toy store can call themselves a magician. And many bad magicians, as well as incompetent clowns and characters do just that.

The first thing is to decide what type of magic you want for your event. Magicians generally perform two types of magic: stand-up/stage and close-up/strolling. In stand-up/stage, the magician performs a show that’s appropriate for small to large audiences that can include birthday parties, schools and theaters. The bigger the venue, the larger the tricks and presentation.

In close-up/strolling performances, the magician walks around at an event and performs “close-up” tricks using cards, coins and other objects. Strolling magic works well at open houses, cocktail parties, company picnics, holiday gatherings, hospitality suites, picnics and other events.

STORY CONTINUED,

Insist on a Magic Pro

Professional magicians provide fun, magical shows, and it can take years for a performer to hone his or her show to the point that it’s a great one. Any professional these days should have a web site that offers information about them and their shows. And the top professionals feature videos on their web pages that let you clearly see the types of routines that they perform and their presentation and interaction with audiences. Comparing videos is an excellent way to evaluate a performer.

A good magician is flexible and can customize a show for a particular audience and age group. An experienced magician will ask you about your audience and event and tell you what he or she can offer to give you the best possible show. In general, percentage wise, there are more incompetent performers who try to perform at kids’ parties, although there are some who are less than stellar who perform close-up and at more formal stage shows.

Hiring the right magician for an event is important. You don’t want someone who performs mental predictions and mind-reading for a kids’ show. And you don’t want to hire a magician who only performs for kids to perform at a grown-up function. Again, a magician’s web site and video should tell you what you need to know.

Hiring for Kids' Shows

As a general rule, any performer that offers a magic show along with face painting and balloons and games is probably not going to offer first rate magic. Many clowns perform a style of magic that they call “silly magic,” and most clowns admit that they aren’t magicians and can’t hold kids’ attention long with magic. There are high-level clowns who perform excellent magic shows, but they are rare exceptions.

If a costumed character says that he or she performs magic, this is likely to be a poor magic show. Many costumed performers purchase a few low-end magic tricks so they have something, anything, to do with the kids when they visit. There’s only so much that a person in a Sponge Bob costume can physically do. And it’s virtually a sure thing that the person in the suit is not a serious magician who has worked to create an entertaining show.

There are some accomplished magicians who wear wizard suits to kids’ parties and perform magic shows. Unfortunately, there are also costumed performers who purchase and wear wizard suits and call themselves magicians when they have no real show. In this case, it’s good to find out more about the magician. If he or she is a full time magic pro with experience and a good video, it’s likely that the wizard show could be a good one.

Bottom Line

There are lots of performers who call themselves magicians, but only a select minority truly offer entertaining and mysterious magic shows. Hopefully the tips in this story will help you to hire a magician who can make your event a fun and memorable one.

Trump, Twitter and Television. A True Sign of the Apocalypse. Ugh!

Two new television show announcements came across the TV Week.com TV Bizwire today. The fist being another Donald Trump reality show in which he turns reality televisions most unreal and all around annoying and awful person, 'Omarosa' into a bachelorette. And the second is a show based on the tweets on a popular twitter page. Yes, folks Twitter pages are being turned into television shows. 45 character partial sentences are the new television script. The combination of both of these stories pretty much make me want to unplug my television for ever.

A true sign of the Apocalypse I say.

This is just continuing bad news for anybody with talent as an actor or writer. Television executives must be going nuts trying to keep up with the speed that the Internet and social media makes something viral. Execs are so afraid they are going to miss the next best thing that they will buy and take a chance on anything that gets Internet buzz.

This blogger personally gave up on all reality television as I find it insulting to anybody with a fair amount of intelligence. Enough already, enough!! UGH!! "Shark Tank" on ABC is the only reality show I watch because it involves REAL people with REAL ideas and REAL businesses they are trying to make successful. I do not watch "The Biggest Loser" but that is a show that seems to make a REAL difference in peoples lives. --Frank Murgia

Donald Trump and his old “Apprentice” villain are reuniting to produce a new reality show that will attempt to find her a husband, Variety reports.

The eight-episode show "Omarosa's Ultimate Merger" will air on cable’s TV One. Omarosa will choose from 12 bachelors who will vie for her affection by competing in relationship and business challenges.

Man Wins $166M, Casino Denies the Jackpot.

CASINO DENIES MAN $166 MILLION JACKPOT

A Florida man, Bill Seebeck hit one hell of a jackpot. Playing the $4 slots, he hit the biggest Man Wins $166M, Casino Denies the Jackpot.jackpot in the history of the state of Florida: $166,666,666.65. The casino looked at the number and thought two things: 1) that is way more money than we want to lose and 2) that is too many consecutive sixes for foul play to not be involved.

It turns out, they may have been right. Casinos make it their policy to investigate every jackpot (wouldn’t you?), and after they roped the machine off, they looked into whether or not Seebeck’s win was legitimate. They concluded (surprise) that it was not because the machine’s alleged top payout was $99,000. Seebeck (surprise) claimed he wanted a good lawyer.

Usually, when you hit a jackpot, the machine “locks up” and stops spinning. There are flashing lights and an electronic signal is sent to a casino attendant instantaneously to let them know about the win. In Seebeck’s case, the casino is claiming that the machine continued to spin “out of control,” that it was their policy to not payout for malfunctioning machines, and that he would therefore be getting no money.

This is actually protocol for all jackpots over $5,000. A casino attendant, in these cases, always checks the machine for malfunctions, and as the jackpots get larger, even the machine manufacturers will travel to the casino to check the machine. You've got to be a phenomenal liar to put one over on the casinos (like these guys).

So, at the end of the day, when the casino offered Seebeck an undisclosed amount for a settlement, he should be thanking his lucky (sort of?) stars. The Seminoe Hard Rock Casino had this to say:

“The Seminole Hard Rock Casino Tampa has made an offer to William Seebeck, and he has accepted, recognizing that the slot machine he was playing on Sunday malfunctioned, in what can be best described to the layman as a “computer glitch.”

“Determination of a malfunction was made by representatives of the machine’s manufacturer and software provider, according to established gaming industry standards, with confirmation from an independent third-party laboratory analysis. The casino has opted to settle this matter for an undisclosed amount as a good faith gesture, and we look forward to welcoming Mr. Seebeck on future visits.”

Giant Eagle opens super-sized Market District near Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh Business Times - by Tim Schooley

A pyramid of pomegranates. Revolving doors wide enough to drive a forklift through, let alone push a grocery cart. And a hydroponic garden where lettuce and herbs are grown on the sales floor.

Not to mention 250 brands of beer sold by the six pack.

Such is the parade of attention-getting features at the showcase of a store that Giant Eagle debuted Thursday with the opening of its Market District at Settler’s Ridge. The store is the company’s first that was designed and built from the ground up for the upscale format.

Built on a reclaimed coal mine in Robinson Township, the 150,000 square foot store opened to a host of dignitaries and media and a rush of customers accessing the new shopping center from the new Settler’s Cabin exchange on the Parkway West.

It’s an infrastructure addition that Giant Eagle chairman David Shapira said made the new Market District, the largest food store in the region, possible.

“It makes it a regional location rather than one that just serves its own locality,” he said, praising Allegheny County executive Dan Onorato for helping to make the exit ramp possible.

Make no mistake, Giant Eagle is striving to attract shoppers from both near and far to the Market District store, which employs 650 people. The store’s architectural focal point is it great hall” in the middle of the floor plan, where shoppers can browse for hundreds of kinds of produce under an 85-foot ceiling. Beyond its offerings of 65,000 different products, the Market District also offers a cooking school, a 100-capacity banquet room and conference facility on its second level. Giant Eagle’s newest store also goes beyond the offerings at its established Market District stores in Bethel Park and in the city’s Shadyside neighborhood in the variety of prepared foods it offers.

The store has an Italian Gelato bar, a Tandoori oven, from which it serves various Indian dishes, a Rosti bar, from which it serves Swiss potato pancakes, and Crepe bar, along with its prepared foods standbys sold at its charcuterie and its sushi bar that have proven popular at its other Market District locations.

“We want customers to view this as a restaurant destination,” said Brett Merrell, the senior vice president for Market District.

Our parent company, talent network, inc. received a call from Zo Co Productions – the Dr. Oz Show Features Producers of the Dr. Oz Show, which is filmed at NBC Studios in Manhattan, NY.

They came across our website and found our Life Size Big Operation Table. They wanted to have it air on a segment of the Dr. Oz Show.

My boss asked me if I would like to deliver it to NBC Studios - I was excited at the opportunity. We packed up Operation and headed for the Manhattan.

While we waited for Dr. Oz to perform surgery on the patient, we headed out to see some of the Big Apple. Our first stop was Rockefeller Center then of course a walk through Time Square, China Town, Little Italy and of course a horse drawn buggy ride through Central Park. What a great city but they are right NY is a town that never sleeps.

The prop crew at NBC Studios said the Big Operation Table was perfect and the patient made a full recovery.
