Party Planning - 10 Essential Tips

10 Essential Tips for Planning an Amazing Party
by David Lawrence

1. Start early. - The earlier, the better. That way, you can get in ahead of other things on peoples’ schedules, and give people a chance to plan around you. This is especially important if the party is holiday related.

2. Shop Around. - (Closely related to #1) Don’t buy at a high-class decoration store, what you can easily get at a discount store (both online and offline). Chances are, your guests won’t know the difference. Always do price comparisons for service such as caterers or performers, and understand what the standard going rate is for that service.

3. BE CREATIVE. – Take a good look at every party you’ve ever thrown and do something completely different. For instance, a friend of mine did ‘An Evening of Murder’ and it was a brilliant success. The more interesting the party, the more likely people will come. That being said, try to keep the ‘cheese factor’ to a minimum.

4. Don’t invite more people than you can reasonably handle. - I know it’s tempting to invite a lot of people on the idea that only half of them might make it, but believe me when I say it’s extraordinarily embarrassing when they all show up.

5. Don’t try to do everything yourself. - Make sure to delegate to your friends or family to distribute the labor. For instance, get one person to handle the decorations etc. OR hire a caterer, set up a play list on your computer to auto-DJ, or hire a live performer such as a Magician.

6. Add a personal touch. - Personalize the invitations and ask for suggestions for music and food, so that you can sort out allergies and varying tastes ahead of time.

7. DON’T PANIC. - Never in the history of time, has a party gone perfectly. It’s quite likely that something will go wrong, and when it does, just try to roll with it. Make some back-up plans, but for the most part, learn to have a sense of humor about any mishaps.

8. Set a time limit. - Make sure you tell your guests what time you expect the party to END- this can help alleviate the awkward situation of dealing with guests that could go all night. (And there’s always a few)

9. Set a Fixed Budget. - it’s very tempting to go all out, but it’s not worth the nervous breakdown you’ll have when you see your credit card bill a month later. As previously mentioned, try to delegate, so that you don’t end up breaking the bank.

10. And this is the most important point. - HAVE FUN. Keep an eye on the progress of the party, but also try to enjoy yourself. Your guests will benefit from your positive energy and enjoy themselves by extension.

Rock, Comedy and Two Guitars

Rock/Comic Mark Eddie teamed up with his old band mate Carlo Volhl for a special show advertised as “Dueling Guitars”. One of our clients was looking to entertain an intimate high-level group outside on the shores of Lake Louise in Calgary, Canada. They wanted someone that would be fun, musical and know how to read audience.

The client had used Mark Eddie for one of their other divisions but this setting really was not conducive to comedy and they didn’t want just another musical performer – singing songs. The corporate client settled in on Mark’s acoustic show called “Dueling Guitars" similar to a dueling piano show one would see at “Howl at the Moon” or "Sing-Sings." Mark and Carlo take it a step further with great rock guitar solos, Marks dead on impressions and sing-a-longs laced with comedy. The client was hoping for Mark & Carlo to entertain their guests for 30 to 40 minutes after a long 7-course dinner. The dueling guitars was such a big hit after two hours of non-stop playing and laughing client had to end show to get guests to bed for their early departures the next day.

Double Header Comedy

In today’s economy it’s good to see companies concerned and appreciating their employees. Every year the Sheetz Corporation throws a party at Seven Springs for all their employees that have worked there for 5 years or more. It has grown so much that they now have to spilt it into two different groups – and next year possibly three.

This year Sheetz wanted to do a comedy show after their dinner – they could not make up their minds between Mark Eddie & Rocky LaPorte so we offered them a special deal for a double bill comedy show. Since they now have two parties the comedians did one show on Tuesday – were off on Wednesday and did their second show on Thursday. Both shows were a huge success and client hoping they can top it next year.

Penguins Launch New Marketing Campaign: 'Defy Ordinary'

The Pittsburgh Penguins today launched a vibrant new marketing campaign with a two-minute video on their website.

The theme: “Defy Ordinary.”

"This campaign isn’t just about the Penguins players and coaches – it is about the energy of our fans, about the pulse of our region, and about the energy and innovation of 21st century Pittsburgh,” said team president David Morehouse. “We spent the past year-and-a-half conducting extensive branding research. In particular, we found that young Pittsburghers relate closely to our young team and our presence in the community.

“As an organization, we don’t want the status quo. We want to constantly challenge ourselves to be better, to be different, to continue to evolve on and off the ice.

The launch of the campaign itself defies ordinary: Through an online contest, one fan will win two free season tickets to the 2009-10 Penguins season.

An online registration form is available at the end of the video. The lucky fan who wins the season tickets will have those tickets presented by a Penguins player, and will have a photograph taken with the Stanley Cup.

Emmy Awards: 'Mad Men,' '30 Rock' win -- again, Neil Patrick Harris is terrific
By Chuck Barney
Contra Costa Times

In the end, Emmy stuck wiith tradition and awarded faves "Mad Men" and "30 Rock" top honors. But host Neil Patrick Harris injected some life into the show.

Here are some noteworthy observations from TV writer Chuck Barney who blogged while watching the show.

AND THE WINNER IS...A LACK OF ORIGINALITY: Here's one of several reasons why the Emmys aren't just as compelling as other awards shows: Too many repeat award winners.

Nothing against Glenn Close ("Damages") or Bryan Cranston ("Breaking Bad"). They're great actors. But they both won in their respective categories last year and that tends to take some of the fun out of the proceedings.

JON STEWART PRAISES NEIL PATRICK HARRIS: Jon Stewart, who knows a thing or two about hosting high-profie awards shows, gives a big thumb's up to Neil Patrick Harris.

After his "Daily Show" prevailed in the Outstanding Variety Show category for the seventh year in a row, Stewart raved about NPH's stage presence.

"You're doing a wonderful job," he said. "I'm seriours. You're tremendous. And these shows they usually suck."

SOME GENUINELY FUNNY MOMENTS: Jimmy Fallon had me cracking up with his auto-tune song. Earlier, I loved seeing anchorman Brian Williams recite the names of the "SNL" writers ("Or as they're collectively known - nerds.") And Ricky Gervais? Well, he's always funny.

Gervais calls the Emmys "the greatest awards ceremony in the world," mainly because it doesn't present him with the self-esteem issues that the Oscars do. That show, he explains, is full of glamorous, attractive movie stars. "In this room, I'm probably above average," he says. "Steve Carell is considered handsome."

Then he goes on to make a crack about the syndication riches he'll be making on "The Office." "That joke," he claims, "is for the 5,000 people in his room - not the 5,000 people watching at home."

Patrick Swayze Dies at 57. Celebs Comment and Tweet.

The 15th of September, 2009
From the Huffington Post
By Christy Lemire

---

LOS ANGELES — Patrick Swayze, the hunky actor who danced his way into moviegoers' hearts with "Dirty Dancing" and then broke them with "Ghost," died Monday after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 57.Patrick Swayze Dies at 57. Celebs Comment and Tweet.
"Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months," his publicist, Annett Wolf, said in a statement Monday evening. Swayze died in Los Angeles, Wolf said, but she declined to give further details.

Fans of the actor were saddened to learn in March 2008 that Swayze was suffering from a particularly deadly form of cancer. He kept working despite the diagnosis, putting together a memoir with his wife and shooting "The Beast," an A&E drama series for which he had already made the pilot.

Swayze said he opted not to use painkilling drugs while making "The Beast" because they would have taken the edge off his performance. The show drew a respectable 1.3 million viewers when the 13 episodes ran in 2009, but A&E said it had reluctantly decided not to renew it for a second season.

When he first went public with the illness, some reports gave him only weeks to live, but his doctor said his situation was "considerably more optimistic" than that. Swayze acknowledged that time might be running out given the grim nature of the disease.

"I'd say five years is pretty wishful thinking," Swayze told ABC's Barbara Walters in early 2009. "Two years seems likely if you're going to believe statistics. I want to last until they find a cure, which means I'd better get a fire under it."

C. Thomas Howell, who costarred with Swayze in "The Outsiders," "Grandview U.S.A." and "Red Dawn," said: "I have always had a special place in my heart for Patrick. While I was fortunate enough to work with him in three films, it was our passion for horses that forged a friendship between us that I treasure to this day. Not only did we lose a fine actor today, I lost my older `Outsiders' brother."

Other celebrities used Twitter to express condolences, and "Dirty Dancing" was the top trending topic for a while Monday night, trailed by several other Swayze films.

Ashton Kutcher – whose wife, Demi Moore, costarred with Swayze in "Ghost" – wrote: "RIP P Swayze." Kutcher also linked to a YouTube clip of the actor poking fun at himself in a classic "Saturday Night Live" sketch, in which he played a wannabe Chippendales dancer alongside the corpulent – and frighteningly shirtless – Chris Farley.

'Jay Leno Show' Premieres: Reviewers Slam Lame Comedy Bits, Unfunny Monologue (VIDEO)

The long-anticipated "Jay Leno Show" premiered last night to mixed (but leaning-toward-terrible) reviews. Most critics agreed the episode was very similar to his work on the "Tonight Show" but that the celebrity guests felt more forced. Here's a round-up of their thoughts and the video from Jay's first 10p show.

Mary McNamara of the "LA Times" had harsh words for Jay's monologue:

"It's not a good sign when the Bud Light commercial is funnier than the comedy show it interrupts ... his opening monologue seem[ed] like an attempt to cash in on the current vampire fixation -- comedy of the undead"

Local Girl Megan Wolfey Makes Debut in “Sorority Row” Movie

---

PITTSBURGH -Last year Pittsburgh Actress, Model, Host and Mom, Megan Wolfley was cast in her first SAG role as a principal in the slasher movie "Sorority Row" as Sorority Sister Megan.

We had a chance to chat with Megan and she had the following to say after the attending Megan Wolfley Sorority Row Moviepremier last Wednesday. (National Release Friday, September 11, 2009)

"The movie was decent...Standard Slash 'em-up Hollywood formula...lots of boobs.ha-ha

You see me throughout the movie but they cut a lot of parts as happens in Hollywood and happens early in careers. I am cool with it. You always hope for more but the experience and relationships and contacts developed was well worth it."

We asked Megan if she showed any skin throughout the movie.

"Ha-ha def not me!!! Trust me I have my morals and its definitely not worth it. And I would be fired from my job with the Steelers in a heartbeat! Also disowned, and single! I couldn’t imagine embarrassing my son (in the future) if his friends decided to throw in a movie and oops! There’s mommy! ...Ha-ha needless to say I have many reasons not to show my body!"

As you can tell Megan is a pretty honest and light-hearted fun person.

It has been a good year for Megan as she just recently ended 5 months of summer fund raising for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundations as she was chosen as part of this years "Pittsburgh's 50 Finest." She continues her work with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Megan also just secured another acting role in the upcoming movie “Love and Other Drugs” starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway which starts filming this month.

A note from talent network news..
At first we thought wow, this is an odd pick. Stupid, this will never work, what does Ellen technically know about music? Five minutes later we love it. Ellen is very popular, likeable and very honest and real and yes very funny. What she brings is the regular person like us to the judges table. She will judge like the home audience feels and hears and thinks. What the record buyer thinks. We like it and look forward to a sober judge that does not repeat exactly what Randy and Kara say. A judge with a brain and career of her own. Congrats FOX. Good move.

Fox Surprises All of Us—Picks Ellen DeGeneres to Replace Paula as Fourth Judge; Fan Reaction Mixed. BONUS: Revealing Video From Simon's Appearance on 'Ellen' Earlier This Year

The producers of Fox’s “American Idol” took an unexpected turn and tapped talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, a self-described big fan of the show, as "Idol's" fourth judge, filling the seat held since the show’s beginning by Paula Abdul.

“Think of all the money I’ll save from not having to text in my vote,” DeGeneres said in part in her statement announcing she was joining the show, according to The Hollywood Reporter. She’ll come on board after the audition episodes, which have already lined up a long list of guest judges.

There was immediate chatter on the Internet about Ellen representing the "fan's perspective" on the show. Commented one Hollywood wag to TVWeek about that idea, "Does the show need that? I thought the fan's perspective was represented by the millions who vote each week on which contestants go and stay."

This morning the Associated Press is reporting that the reaction by 'Idol' fans in the blogosphere is decidedly mixed about the choice of Ellen to replace Paula.

Finally, here's a great video clip from earlier this year when Simon Cowell was on Ellen's TV show. Ellen get right down to it immediately and starts quizzing Cowell about whether it's a good idea for "Idol" to have four judges. Thanks to TMZ for finding the clip.

Penguins President David Morehouse Brings Stanley Cup Home to Beechview

The 8th of September, 2009
A compilation from talent network news/ kdka tv/ pittsburgh tribune-review/ Penguins.com

THANK YOU NOTE's:

A Special thanks from talent network news to Mark Rumpf who invited us to Pauline Park. Mark grew up right next to Pauline park and grew up with David Morehouse.

And a Very Special thanks to David Morehouse who has achieved championship dreams and made the dreams of many Pittsburgh Penguins fans come true by bringing the cup to his home turf.

Penguins president takes the Stanley Cup to hometown of Beechview

David Morehouse stood at center court of the blacktop in Penguins President David Morehouse Brings Stanley Cup Home to BeechviewBeechview, reminiscing about the days when he and friends squirted a hose to turn their basketball court into a hockey rink.

Morehouse likes to say he spent more time at Pauline Park than he did at home. When the Penguins won the Stanley Cup, the team president decided he would bring the trophy to the playground.

"I felt very fortunate to be in the position I was, in center ice with the Stanley Cup," Morehouse said, "and one of the first things I thought about was to bring this back to where I shaped my life."

Morehouse returned Saturday afternoon to the park just a few doors up from his childhood home on Pauline Avenue — where his brother, Don, now lives — to share his day with the Stanley Cup in celebration of the Penguins' National Hockey League championship. Despite informing just a few friends by phone, hundreds of Penguins fans showed up to take photos with the Cup.

"I literally made three phone calls, and the first two I said, 'Don't tell anybody,'" Morehouse said with a laugh. "I tried to get a couple people I grew up with, and everybody showed up."

Everybody from Dick Frank, the long-time football coach at St. Catherine of Sienna, to former NFL standout Jim Sweeney to Chartiers Valley basketball coach Tim McConnell showed up.

"This was the gathering place," said Sweeney, who spent 16 seasons in the NFL, including four with the Steelers. "The people of Beechview, they don't forget where they came from. This was a great community to grow up in."

They shared stories about growing up with Morehouse, who worked on four presidential campaigns before becoming Penguins president in April 2007. While no one expected this of Morehouse, after serving as an adviser to Bill Clinton, Al Gore and John Kerry, no one put it past him, either.

"Dave's had a lot of exploits in his life," Mark Rumpf said. "Beechview is having some tough times right now, so it means a lot that he brought it back. Clinton and Gore never came to Pauline Park, but the Cup is here."
