10 Essential Tips for Planning an Amazing Party
by David Lawrence

1. Start early. - The earlier, the better. That way, you can get in ahead of other things on peoples’ schedules, and give people a chance to plan around you. This is especially important if the party is holiday related.

2. Shop Around. - (Closely related to #1) Don’t buy at a high-class decoration store, what you can easily get at a discount store (both online and offline). Chances are, your guests won’t know the difference. Always do price comparisons for service such as caterers or performers, and understand what the standard going rate is for that service.

3. BE CREATIVE. – Take a good look at every party you’ve ever thrown and do something completely different. For instance, a friend of mine did ‘An Evening of Murder’ and it was a brilliant success. The more interesting the party, the more likely people will come. That being said, try to keep the ‘cheese factor’ to a minimum.

4. Don’t invite more people than you can reasonably handle. - I know it’s tempting to invite a lot of people on the idea that only half of them might make it, but believe me when I say it’s extraordinarily embarrassing when they all show up.

5. Don’t try to do everything yourself. - Make sure to delegate to your friends or family to distribute the labor. For instance, get one person to handle the decorations etc. OR hire a caterer, set up a play list on your computer to auto-DJ, or hire a live performer such as a Magician.

6. Add a personal touch. - Personalize the invitations and ask for suggestions for music and food, so that you can sort out allergies and varying tastes ahead of time.

7. DON’T PANIC. - Never in the history of time, has a party gone perfectly. It’s quite likely that something will go wrong, and when it does, just try to roll with it. Make some back-up plans, but for the most part, learn to have a sense of humor about any mishaps.

8. Set a time limit. - Make sure you tell your guests what time you expect the party to END- this can help alleviate the awkward situation of dealing with guests that could go all night. (And there’s always a few)

9. Set a Fixed Budget. - it’s very tempting to go all out, but it’s not worth the nervous breakdown you’ll have when you see your credit card bill a month later. As previously mentioned, try to delegate, so that you don’t end up breaking the bank.

10. And this is the most important point. - HAVE FUN. Keep an eye on the progress of the party, but also try to enjoy yourself. Your guests will benefit from your positive energy and enjoy themselves by extension.
